People are ignorant. This is not easy AT ALL. Read the forums.

People judge fat people. They only want them to get better if it comes through a crucible of tremendous shame and suffering.

%$#@ that. Get healthy.

People are azzhats. It's the same with depression, if you have never truly battled it people always say - 'get over it, do something', like that helps - gee I didn't know that's all it takes to fix it <sarcasm>. They believe the media rhetoric about just eat less and exercise, it's more complicated than that.

Well, for me, this was the easy way out...

I'm in my mid 30s. Through yo-yo dieting I've lost and regained 200+ pounds over the past 2 decades (e.g., lose 30, regain 50, lose 60, regain 100, lose 50, regain 90, rinse/repeat).

I could lose a lot of weight, but could never keep it off. As soon as I reached a normal weight range my body fought like hell to fatten up again. Every single time.

Yo-yo dieting is hard. Losing weight the old-fashioned way is hard. Regaining massive amounts of weight over and over again is hard on the body and crushes the spirit.

But weight loss surgery? Yes, it's been my easy way out. Others may feel differently.

Other than post-op soreness and fatigue, surgery has been far easier than doing it the traditional way. It's also easier to keep the weight off, which is what matters. I'm nearly 3 years out with no regrets.

I agree with Introversion, this is SO much easier than any other way I've tried to lose weight. There have been difficulties sure, but overall it has been much, much easier than the rest of my weight loss life.

The real question is, why wouldn't people WANT the easy way for you? Why would our loved ones want us to suffer through the "hard way"? Like it's inherently bad for things to be easy? Why is easy equated with evil?

It's ok for people around you to be concerned about any major surgery. Reassure them you are going to be ok and health is your priority.

Yep, the easy way out is a common comment when people think bariatric surgery. Just rise above any negativity and press on with your decisions in life.

Any major change in life takes work. I weighed and log my food, learn how to properly fuel my body, got serious about exercise, Most of the work I have done is the mental/ behavioral side of weight loss. I had overcome my negative self talk. deal with poor body image about my weight and stress/emotional eating.

All of the work was absolutely worth getting my health and my life back.

I just had my sleeve done 11/24/2017. Thought I would respond and let you know some of my circumstances. I was actually supposed to have it done 11/22/17 but unfortunately, when I got to the hospital on my surgery date of 11/22/17, I was in atrial fibrillation with a high heart rate and low blood pressure. People with AFIB also have a danger of blood clots and stroke. I had discontinued my blood thinner 5 days before, in fact. Luckily, I had a bariatric surgeon who was willing to keep me in the hospital and get me out of AFIB, and then I was able to go ahead and have my surgery on Friday, 11/24/17. which I pulled through like a champ. I'm betting you will too. Good Luck!

I don’t know about the medical issues you might have so talk to your doc. A lot will change after surgery. This is not to be taken lightly but not everyone is gonna be supportive and you have to be ready for that.

So I heard the same nonsense about the “easy way out”.... from other friends who struggle with weight and those who don’t. Most people do not dare, but I’ve had rude people point blank ask. If I feel like being nice I say, “I think you want to tell me that I look happy. I am! So much good going on in my life right now & I feel great. Thanks.”

I was the kinda person who was always agreeable, answered every question people ask. Well now I don’t do anything if I don’t want to. That’s the boldness I’ve gained from this new journey and it’s huge. I’m still loveable but just have better boundaries and it’s noted. I believe some are jealous of the confidence and joy for life you gain from being free of the weight. You change and others don’t like it.

This. Both losing and maintaining is finally possible without that much hassle. I'd say the "normal" amount of vigilance a lot of other people who were never fat have to use is necessary to not gain at the moment.

Because fat people need to be punished and need to suffer - at least this is what a lot of people seem to be thinking.

Others might be thinking "I need a lot of discipline to battle my weight, too - why should you have it any easier?" which boils down to naked envy.

I heard a lot from my family about a (now-ex) family friend who had gastric bypass surgery many years ago and how she took the easy way out. F*ck them. Look at some of my surgeon’s pre-surgery requirements:

A psych evaluation - not easy

Getting your sleep apnea under control - not always easy

Getting your A1C below 7 - very, very hard for some people

Doesn’t sound like the easy way any more, does it?

Next time somebody tells you that you took the easy way out, you just tell them, "As Frank Sinatra said, I did it my way." [emoji4]

It is kind of funny.. If you had cancer and there was a treatment that worked, would people say "they took the easy way out" and be negative about it? Cancer is probably somewhat out of people's control - but what about smoking?

Weight at the level where you're getting surgery is a disease / addiction and if surgery is an easy way out (at this point I don't currently believe there's much 'easy' about it so far) - then why the heck wouldn't we be pushing people to do it and supporting them. Any way out of a life threatening disease is a good thing, if surgery makes it easier then everyone should be super supportive. For whatever reason there's a pretty big trend around looking down on fat people and some sense that they're weak willed or whatever.

Luckily for me I'm not worried about what anyone else thinks and want to use whatever tool is going to work best long term to help me be and stay healthy.

This is why I’m not telling but a select group of people. But while I agree that it is probably a heck of a lot easier to do than regular dieting and exercise, I also think that the journey to get there is a rough one. I’ve had to change so much. Although I also had really bad bad habits. Each person is different.
Good luck and everyone will forget how you got there once they can’t imagine you the way you were.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
