Intermittent Fasting

Recommended Posts

I have reached my first goal and want to focus on my body composition (lose a little more fat). I have started researching intermittent fasting and it seems like a very safe way to encourage the body to burn more fat, level blood sugar spikes, and lower insulin levels. I really like that you don't have to be eating a certain diet to take advantage of the benefits it has to offer. I am currently listening to the book "The Complete Guide to Fasting" by Dr. Jason Fung and Jimmy Moore.

Have any of you tried this or are doing it long term after having WLS? Can you share your experiences? Thank you!!!

I would disagree. Exercise, lean Protein, and time that is the best formula. Fasting can cause you to loose lean muscle mass which is counter productive to what you are trying to accomplish. My trainer would freak out at the idea of fasting (has done it to me already). With exercise and proper diet your body will eventually get enough muscle mass that is has no choice but to burn the fat if you keep a good lean protein diet. The trick is to keep the muscle you have or add to it a little to get to that tipping point, and if you keep your diet and exercise going it is just a matter of time at that point. I have gotten to 20.3% body fat now, granted it has taken me 2 years to do it but my body has not got to the point it can burn the extra fat without loosing muscle tissue.

Intermittent fasting is doable and workable. Despite me not sticking to it before WLS, I did it for about 3 months and saw significant changes. I disagree with the above poster, because I did my weights during my fast. I gained muscle and was getting stronger. When you do you homework on how the body works during IF, it’s pretty fascinating. It can be a long term way of eating. There are several here who do the 16:8 IF. Once I reach my goal and not working (time for weights in my fasting period) , I’ll be doing it as well. You’ll get tons of OPINIONS on here, including mine. 😂 but like what you did to go wfpb, do for IF, research it, learn how your body processes fasting and eating in a window. I highly recommend it.

There’s even an IF thread somewhere here, but I don’t think it’s active. Maybe we should activate it?? We’re good at keeping things going eh? Lol

Thus far my research has not shown me that people who use intermittent fasting lose lean muscle mass. What I have learned is that body builders actually use this method to help keep body fat low and gain muscle.

Anyway thank you for your reply. I am hoping that others who have done this will reply.

I posted my reply before seeing yours..lol...

So far what you have said is what I have learned. I am still researching, but this seems like a very good way to help burn off these last few stubborn fat pounds. There are other health benefits especially for people that are prone to insulin resistance. I am probably going to try this at some point soon. I am glad to have your positive input!!

Yes!!! :D

We should definitely get one started. Maybe this can be the new thread.

FYI....WLS is a fast. It is a surgically induced fast!!! That was in the book.

This is where I’ve learned about IF. A good friend of mine is a body builder and he explained it to me. I then did tons of research. Hugh Jackman does this to get ready for his movies when he’s got to show his bod. Lol. He’s cut, that’s from IF.

I will share more insights from the book I am listening to later. I hope more people that have experience with this will share with all of us on this thread.

I have to go to the field today for work - cutting down some trees in the forest. See you all later.

Yes! I do IF on and off.

For the poster above it's not long term fasting it's just extending your window from the last night to "break"fast. 5:2 is another style I've used.

There are actually scientific studies on it's immune system benefits as well studied in cancer/chemo patients. I did a three day clear liquid fast based on that research.

I just read a LOT of incorrect information in the comments above. You are correct, watch the documentary called "The Science of Fasting". It is not on youtube, I saw it on Amazon Prime video. Or google Dr Valter Longo he is a world renowned biochemist who studies gerontology at USC. His work and the work at a Fasting Treatment Center in Russia is amazing!!!! Here is a link to an article in Science Magazine

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
