Let's Play Another Round of "How I Get My Protein" post WLS

Recommended Posts

@Lukeadelle ((hugs)) How frustrating!! I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I have an internist for my PCP and he's pretty awesome about referrals. He told me that if this dose didn't work, then he would have to refer me to an endocrinologist to work with me on the thyroid. So far, it's working...

If it were me, I'd tell my GP that he either needs to refer me to an endo or I am getting a new GP. Of course, I'd make sure you had your medical records copies ahead of time, and find the new GP and get them ready to input into your insurance and make sure you aren't gonna need this goober for the next 90 days while the insurance changes over your GP of record. LOL. Then I'd get the new GP to refer out. To pick the new one, hopefully you can talk to people to see who they use in your insurance/neighborhood/work, etc. I would think if you had radiation to your thyroid years ago, that you definitely need to be working with an endo. I'd probably ask my bariatric surgeon for the referral. They have a vested interest in having patients reach their weight loss goals. At least mine does. It would make her numbers look bad if I don't succeed and do the follow-ups that will last a minimum of 5 years.

I agree. I’m going to speak with my bariatric surgeon and ask for a referral. Not only to an endo but a new gp. My gp is retiring at the end of the year so not like he will miss me. My numbers haven’t been right since 2005 when I did the radiation. Actually before but just sayin. Not like he hasn’t had enough time to figure this out. My tsh is always low but my t4 has been running normal.

Hello Everyone!
I have been reading all your post to this game & I think its pretty interesting!
Im now 9wks post op & this morning my scale showed my weight at 188. My weight b4 surgery was 210. Im happy to loose my weight slowly so that I can stay on top of firming up my flabby skin! Anyway I started eating regular foods at 3 1/2 wks PO but I was having trouble getting my required Protein in! I could no longer tolerate any flavor of premier shakes or cheese & i dont like milk. Never have. Finally I started using the Isopure Protein Powder mixing it in my flavored water. Now I feel much better about my protein intake. I can drink up to 48oz of Water but it has to be flavored! Now that Im nearly 3 mos post op & can get more variety of foods, I would like to get my protein requirement as well as cal, carbs, Fiber & fats by eating real foods & just limit my protein powder for on my workout days! Also since I still cant eat cheese( except cottage cheese), All porks & tuna, Im going Keto paleo/vegan dieting! I love avocados with my food, all healthy oils, salsas, Beans & Ezekiel product are my favorites! Soo please continue to post your meal plans for me to get good ideas![emoji16]

I just discovered nutritional yeast (2 tbsl = 60 calories & 9 g of complete protein). You can add it to all kinds of recipes. it has a kind of cheese/nutty taste). The name sounds yuk, but it is actually tasty and is another food item to play with. Also... I discovered powdered Peanut Butter too! Forgot how much I missed and loved peanut butter. 2 TBSp has 54 calories and 4.4 g Protein. Mixed it with some banana and plain yogurt today and it was the BOMB.

two more ideas for you...

Let's see. I'm 7 months post op, my NUT want me on more food because my latest BIA test also showed that my muscles are not getting enough nutrition and latest blood test shows my total Protein is dipping. Since 6 weeks post op I have gotten all my protein from food (mostly high protein yogurt), but I now have to add in a shake a day to get enough. I get around 100g from food.

Today looks like this

Meal 1 - oatmeal with flax seeds and pumpkin seeds around forgot that add that I have high protein yogurt in it as well. 15g and I a Iced Latte I'll get 22g
Meal 2 - chicken in Fajitas sauce and and 10g of dry Pasta 27g (4-5oz)
Meal 3 - Stew with lean meat, potatoes and carrots 18g (5oz)
Meal 4 - Because I'm lazy, another stew 18g (5oz)
Meal 5 - 125g of salmon and 50g of brussel sprouts 27.5
Meal 6 - Shake

Without the shake I'm at 116g of protein, 43g of fat and 57g of carbs of a total of 1084 kcal. My nut wants me closer to 1400-1500 kcal. If I add the shake I'll get 141 protein, 46 fat and 64 carbs of a total of 1249 kcal.

I meal prep so I know how much each portion has of everything.

Makes sense to increase since you are very close to goal and exercise so much. You're doing great!

I had a really interesting 6 month post opp (1 month delayed) on Thursday @Berry78. I should make a post about it. And yes, I am close to goal, under 10 lbs, although my surgeon told me to not loose too much more.

Congrats on the loss and being so close to goal. Sorry you're having issues with your body metabolizing enough protein! Hope your new intake helps meet your needs.

I will say, your menu sounds like my NUTS wet dream. It's beautiful and sounds so yummy. I want to scream at you right now, "Get in mah belleh!!!!!"

Thanks for playing and sharing!

LOL this made me laugh. I try. I have days where it's nothing like this, but most weekdays are. And I meal prep because I'm lazy to do a lot of cooking during the week, it's usually only the last warm meal I cook fresh, the rest is pre made.

Of course, it's interesting and fun to see what people are eating.

I took to heart the "big picture" stuff with my surgeon's plan. The idea that things need to be liquid, or pureed, or thick/smooth, etc. What I listed wasn't termed in the same way that my plan was.. it was termed in the way that I followed my plan. I didn't introduce things earlier than permitted, but I just left things in a simple, limited way that I could meet my goals without having to make things "look" like real food. Sheesh, what's the point? I get into the fridge, weigh out 2oz cottage cheese, take 10 minutes to eat it, and that is a "meal". But it only has 6g protein.. so now I need to do that 12 times during the day to meet my goal. Until I could eat 4oz at a time, I drank a lot of my Protein (milk and kefir).

The concept of "meals" is just now beginning to make sense (7 months postop!). I can finally eat enough at a time that I can meet my Protein goals with 3 meals and a snack. I would love to cut out dairy altogether (on principle, except that I like it!), I have, at least, cut it down to a couple servings a day.

What was very good was my plan did progress exceptionally slowly.. because truly, I wouldn't have been ready for it to go any faster than it did!

OMG, I so relate to this post! I read on here about people who are eating solid food almost immediately after surgery...now, 5 weeks out, I cannot even imagine that! I just moved on to soft foods, which includes fish and dark meat chicken and I can barely get 2 ounces in...and some things (ground turkey to be exact) just don't work! I'm grateful that in the first weeks my diet was so limited. I didn't care about food anyway and it made it easy to get my protein in...plus it all went down so easily. My recovery experience would have been very different if I'd tried solid food quickly.

I'm still needing a shake for Breakfast, because otherwise I couldn't possibly get enough protein in...even with a shake and fairlife milk in the morning, some days I still come up just short (although most of the time I hit my 80g).

Fluff, you asked how soon I was eating that quantity...

I was eating everything on the plate by 9 or 10 weeks out.. I just had to split it up into 6 meals. Now I can eat it in 3.5 meals, making room for veggies. The plate is holding my Protein, and my Protein requirements haven't changed. If I dropped milk off the menu, I'd have to add 12g protein to the plate. Easier to keep the milk and make room for veggies.

So last night I stayed up eating until 11pm, didn't get my veggies or nuts (I'd eaten my fruit earlier in the day). Went to bed full of Beans. I got close to goal. I wasnt expecting to be gone all day when I left the house, so 5-11pm was eat eat eat.

this is intresting the eat eat eat, i cant eat if im not hungry anymore lol

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
