I get hungry late night

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I am a new sleever . I got my surgery done September 26 2017. I'm down 23 lbs since surgery. I am in the full liquids transitioning into the purée stage . I've tryed everything and I can't keep my food down . Even the Protein Shakes flip my stomach. However I found a fix . I've been eating 2oz of Broccoli cheese Soup for Breakfast lunch and dinner and my snack is dark 2oz -4oz dark chocolate sugar free pudding. My last snack for the day ends at 8pm . I'm satisfied then but then I stay up later and then I get hungry . I get the tummy growling and all . Silly question is this normal?

Congratulations on your progress! Since you've already had surgery, you might find more answers on the POST-surgery forum. That said, so many questions here revolve around the question of normalcy. If you get hungry when you stay up later, what if you went to bed earlier? Good luck!

It is definitely normal to get hungry late night if it has been hours since your last meal. If you have 2 ounces of broccoli cheese Soup at 8pm, then you are probably going to be hungry at 10pm.

You really aren't consuming enough. Think about it, you are consuming 6 ounces of broccoli cheese soup, and 2-4 ounces of sugar free pudding daily. That is less than 300 calories and a minimal amount of Protein per day. I would be starving at almost 3 weeks out if I ate that much, and not just late night. Maybe you can add some unflavored protein to the soup. You could also use Premier Protein shakes to make your sugar free Jello pudding. Finding a way to add in protein would help you stay fuller longer.

Also, if you can't stomach Protein Shakes, maybe protein smoothies will work. Combine 1/2 frozen banana, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries or strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen mango or pineapple, 1 premier Protein Shake (I liked bananas and cream or strawberries and cream), 1 scoop unsweetened Protein Powder, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 cup Water, and ice.

If you want to lower the carbs, omit the mango and/or pineapple, and add a bit of stevia or splenda for sweetness.

I loved these while on full liquids, because 1 of these made around 36 ounces of smoothie. Altogether, the smoothie was around 60g Protein. I would have around 12 ounces per sitting. This would give me 3 of my meals. I would then have some pureed soup with unsweetened protein powder or Bone Broth 2X daily.

I still stayed under 800 calories, and went over 80g Protein each day. Since you don't eat much, you could probably break this into 6 - 6 oz. servings instead and have it over 2 days. It will cut the protein and calorie counts in half, but it will still increase your overall intake.

I start my day at 5am, and go to bed at 10pm each day. I was content with this, and was never hungry. I didn't do this everyday while on full liquids. Some days, I just drank Premier Protein shakes and broth all day. However, most days, I felt that I needed at least some veggies thrown in since I wasn't eating anything. Plus I wanted to avoid getting constipated.

I hope everything works out for you.

I get crazy rumblings late at night that feel like hunger pangs, I asked my team if it was acid and if I should up my omeprazole. They told me that it’s more likely bile reflux and to suck on a slice of lemon.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
