Hi, I had my sleeve done 9/29 and I am now about a week post surgery. Every time I eat I get intense chest pain right on my diaphragm area ( i did have a hernia they removed while in surgery there) the pain gets worse with the thicker the liquid. Has anyone else experienced this ? About how long until it goes away ?

What has your surgeon said about it? Have you called them?

I do believe this is common. You have a TON of swelling and irritation all in that area. You don't have to move as quickly through your diet progression as outlined. As long as you are meeting your goals (protein and fluids), you can stay on thin liquids + Protein Shakes for several weeks.

I was told to see the surgeons NP he said to walk it off. However, walking does not help! I took gas-x and that helped a lot!

It could also be remainder gas bubbles from the air used to inflate your torso during surgery. I had brutally sharp pain in my diaphragm for 7-10 days post surgery. The walking suggestion from the Dr is to just help move the air around so it can gradually work its way out of your system. My MIL used to be an ER nurse. She said they had so many people report to the ER w chest pains thinking it was a heart attack that one of the first questions they would ask was if the individual had recently had surgery to determine if it was actually gas/air pain.

Yes, I had the same thing, and same surgery. It took about 3 weeks for the chest pain to go away. However now that I am on more puréed and moving toward solid foods if I eat something that doesn't agree with me I will get a pain in my throats and chest. That's a warning to me to slow down or back off what I'm eating and eat something I can tolerate better at this point. I keep telling myself that eventually I will be able to eat more regular foods, just not right now. It will get better. Try to eat slow and take smaller sips and bites of your foods and drinks.< br>

I love that y'all are addressing this. I am almost 7 days out and the pain in my chest stinks. I went back to the hospital thinking I had a clot or PE and luckily all tests came back negative. I'm still coughing up phlegm and i still get pangs of pain, but walking and the spirometer seem to help. Anyone still using theirs?

Acid can also cause some serious pain. I've had it in the past and it's been worse with the sleeve, even on meds!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
