What was your mental state after surgery?

This is exactly the right advice, plus the lovely words and helpful information from LillieDuFran about the crisis line.

Immediately after my surgery (the first two weeks) I really felt too strung-out to feel anxiety, depression or much anything else. I was just plain TIRED! But taking the Vitamins regularly (after my doc cleared me) helped immensely. I take my Multi-Vitamin and other supplements and a few meds every day and it really helps keep my energy at a normal level, plus the exercise that I do daily now, helps me better manage my anxiety.

Hang in there, we are here for you and will always be willing to listen.

Glad to hear everything I'm feeling is pretty normal. Thank you for your sweet reply!

I hope so. I'm not drinking caffeine so I better up my exercise. Maybe now I'll have to deal with life instead of hiding behind food.

I need to get back to exercising too. Since being sober I started bingeing on foods that I’m allowed. But doing the reset. I started yesterday. It’s hard but it is supposed to give restriction back. It’ll be okay! Promise ya. And find something to do whether it is crocheting or coloring. Anything on your down time.

I was in a rough place and I think I only felt 'back to normal' about 6 weeks in. It was kind of isolating to only be able to have cottage cheese and Protein Shakes and pudding all the time and then have people comment about how little I was eating and ask me down the road if 'I was going to get anorexic' (from my mother in law) when I was trying really hard to choke down every little bit of food I could.

I was also in sort of a weird place too because I hadn't told anyone about the surgery and when everyone found out because I decided to tell my mom there were some hurt feelings on all sides.

But I promise it gets so much better! I'm not sure if most will agree with me, but I put so much pressure on myself to be perfect that it got me down whenever I slipped up a little bit. And I think that accepting those mistakes and moving forward is so important otherwise you can get bogged down in little mistakes that may wind up being bigger mistakes because of the guilt. Also remembering that it's a journey rather than a race has been important for me!

I am 2 weeks and 2 says post op and the first week I was very irritable, had bad anxiety, got angry easy, sad, and regretted what I did. But then its like it all just stopped at once, about 6 days later. Now I feel a lot better and am super excited to keep losing weight. I have already lost 28 pounds in just 16 days, so that helps a lot. Plus once I signed up for this website it helped a lot to be able to talk with people who were going through the same thing I was. Good luck!!!

Thank you for the tip! I have been feeling pretty out of control lately this I’ll give that a try. I think that’s a big part of my anxiety.

Good luck on your surgery! Will pray for you for a quick recovery!

My surgery went a bit sideways. Got done & BP crashed. Cardiologist came in, but it turned out be bleeding from surgery. Second surgery fixed it. Not discouraged, as I feel great, just tired. Going home tomorrow!

Bless your heart! So glad they were able to fix the problem! That's scary! I was in tears my first night in the hospital. Just stressed and feeling all alone.... I was just happy I was doing something for me, for a change, instead of always for everyone else. It's time for me now. Good luck on your journey!

I’m 6 weeks out and the first few days were awful. No sleep, could barely drink, cried a lot.

Now that I’m on solids I’m a bit better but my intake is still so low I’m cranky and can’t do my heavy workouts except 2x a week because I’m not eating enough. I’m trying to get to 1200 calories a day focusing on fat and Protein but I spend so much time getting my Water in, it’s like I don’t have time to eat!

Also sucks that I think my intake is so low I’ve come to almost a total stall. Not seeing the scale move lately sucks!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
