Sleep apnea!! Diabetic!!Any advice!?!?

Recommended Posts

LOL I call it my "CRAP" machine have only had it for a month and hate it so much. I am also a bit claustrophobic and it bothers me. I will get a new mask in 3 months and will go for the newest one that is very small nose only. I do feel better when I get 5-6 hours with it on. I usually wake up at 5:00 to P and then take it off and go back to sleep for an hour of nice...no mask sleep. LOL

I take two pills a day for my Type 2 Diabetes and hope to go off them too.

My main questions will be what drink to use since I have to have no sugar. I do drink Glucerna, not too great but OK

I may have to add plain Protein powder to it and put in blender with ice.

Or make my own shake with powder and skim milk and splenda and flavorings.

I have Diabetes II, sleep apnea, Hi BP, and a few more issues but these are the things I want the Lap Band to help me with.

(BMI "only" 36)

I am getting so psyched for this surgery -

I've read about so many good things that happen even BEFORE the weight starts to drop

Heck - even within 48 hours post-op health improvements have been noted

(medical articles and studies all over the Internet)

:smile2:

I just hope I don't expect too too much and get disappointed -

Just want to be pleasantly surprised along the way to a better life-style.

Like - run free without pain with my future grandchildren!

I was banded on 6/10/08. I am on a bipap which I expect to go away very soon. My blood pressure was extremely high but I expect to be off the medication by the first of Aug. Some of my other issues were high cholesterol and high lipids. I am totally off the medication for both but the biggest thing is the insulin once a day and byetta twice a day. I have not had to take any shots since the day of my surgery. My A1C is down to 5.2 from 11.5. I cannot believe how good I feel. I love my band.

I have two more weeks and can't wait. My insurance company had no problem with my approval. Since I had the co-morbidities.

I keep trying the CPAP but I end up ripping it off in the middle of the night.

I have another month before I can get a new mask or nose thing. I'll get the nose thing.

Hope that in a few months I won't even need it anymore.

I was advised to bring it to the hospital when I have my surgery. I am staying overnight. They make all Lap Banders stay one night.

Elayne:

I too have those comorbities, and am looking forward to being off the CPAP machine. I do sleep much better with it since I changed to the nasal pillows.

My surgery date is Oct. 13 and I can hardly wait.

Hi all, I have a question for those who say you no longer use a CPAP. Did you go in for another sleep study to confirm you no longer need it, or could you just tell you were sleeping ok? I'm so anxious to be able to get to the point of not needing it. I'm still waiting for insurance approval so it may be a while off yet.

Since my surgery I have noticed that I can sleep much better even without my CPAP. I have not been tested but before I get totally rid of the machine, would get retested. As for my diabetes, the doctor has reduced my medication and insulin and we are watching my glucose very closely.

Good luck with your surgery.

The more I read the more I can not wait for my surgery. I weight 430 lbs, 69.4 BMI, Severe Obstructed sleep Apena, Diabeties, High Blood Pressure, High Cholestrol.

Is is true that one of the biggest inside laughs is the patient calling the next day wanting to know if they should take their diabeties meds when sugar is normal.

Trying to save my career....

I keep trying the CPAP but I end up ripping it off in the middle of the night.

I've been using a CPAP machine for about 7 years now, and I'm completely used to it. But, when I first got it, I used to wake up with it off all the time. Eventually I just quit pulling it off. I do rest soooooo much better with it on. Hopefully I will be able to get rid of it once I'm banded, along with most of my medications. I have almost every one of the co-morbities. Can't wait for a healthier life.

I just started using the Cpap and at first I was getting headaches between my eyes, it felt as if someone hit me there. Now, after I became used to it I can not sleep with out it. But, it does take time to get adjusted.

I was told that when you loss weight the Cpap need to be adjusted, becaust if not the pressure will be to much and can damage your lungs...

Well it's been months since posted and the good news is I am totally off my "CRAP" machine. Back to sleeping normally, only occasional snoring not heavy just a bit when tired. Normal.

As for my Type II diabetes. My AC1 test was 6.1 which was excellent, it had been around an 8 or 9 last year.

I am down to one pill a day now.

You can reverse or really keep this all under control with losing the weight.

I can move and do things that I haven't done for years. Like plant a garden and landscape the front of my house with new plants and shrubs.

I can walk long distances now without being out of breath and feel 10 years younger.

Getting the band was the best thing I ever have done for my body.

Congradulations on getting off the CPAP. I had a sleep study 2 years ago and started it about a month before being banded (9/07) in Sept. of 08 I had another sleep study and was told did not need the cpap machine. Since I had problems with the CPAP I also got a dental device and had the sleep study with it and it worked well and told to just use it if I wanted to. I still use them a bit but not like I used to. I will be 2 years in Sept. Enjoying life and doing all types of things that I would have limited myself to doing before.

I got my APAP 7 years ago after my first sleep study. With previous big weight loss, I had to have my pressure adjusted but still needed the mask. And as I regained weight, the pressure went back up again.

I was banded on 10/31/09 and started having sleeping problems within 2 months, though it took me a while to associate the CPAP with the problems -- restless sleep, waking up tired, and some lightheadedness.

The apnea is now completely gone - I am normal! Had a home sleep study 2 weeks ago, and went from 38/hr to 1.3/hr (normal is under 5). Snored only 3 min. the whole night. So now the APAP is cleaned and put away, and I'm adjusting back to the comfort of just a pillow. Sure is quiet, though!

I HAD MY SURGERY ON 1/17/11 AND WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN OFF METFORMIN 500MG TWICE A DAY. MY ACCU CHECKS STAY IN THE LOW 100'S. I DO USE THE C PAP MACHINE WITH FULL MASK BECAUSE I AM A MOUTH BREATHER. WHAT A PAIN IN THE A-----!!!!! I HATE IT! CAN'T WAIT TO BE ABLE TO GET OFF THAT MACHINE! I ALSO WOULD LOVE TO BE OFF OF MY BLOOD PRESSURE AND CHOLESTEROL MEDS AS WELL. I ALSO HAVE FIBROMYALGIA AND TAKE LYRICA FOR THAT. IT WOULD ALSO BE AWESOME TO BE ABLE TO STOP THAT ONE TOO. BOY I HOPE MY FIBRO IMPROVES OR BETTER YET - DISAPPEARS!!! IT IS THE WORST THING EVER! IN CONSTANT PAIN ALL THE TIME. I WONDER IF ANYONE EVER RECOVERED FROM THAT ONE AFTER LAPBAND? JUST WONDERING!! :)

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
