Help I am getting mixed signals!:heh:

As you may know from previous posts, I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. (Yipee).

I will not start using my CPAP machine until Tuesday or Monday night (waiting for prescription from pulmonary)

MY SURGERY IS OCT. 24TH.

The paperwork provided to me from the hospital states you need to have used your CPAP machine at a minimum of two weeks prior to surgery (or your surgery may have to be re-scheduled). Apparently, they like you to get used to the machine, and make sure that it is working for you.

Here is the catch, On Friday I went for a pre-surgical interview at the hospital with the bariatric nurse coordinator (discussed all medical issues and tests), and she stated 7-10 days is plenty of time to be on the machine before surgery.

Can anyone tell me how long they were on a CPAP for the first time before surgery??

Were some of you diagnosed with sleep apnea before surgery, and did not use a CPAP machine at all before surgery?

I was on my cpap for quite some time before my surgery . But I can tell you the best thing to do is wear the cpap and push through the ackwardness of it and get use to it .

It seems to be that your doc knows when you got or will get your cpap and if it is going to be an issue they would have said something. But sometimes things are not apparant to them . SO I would call the doc on Monday and make them aware of the situation just so they dont have a light bulb moment the day before your surgery .

IS 2 weeks long enough to get use to a cpap YES. Like I said make sure you wear it every night , you will get use to it .

AND You will feel much better.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in June. I decided not to get the cpap because I was not comfortable with it plus I was told that the weight loss would cure the apnea. The surgeon required me to see the anesthesiologist before surgery because of the apnea but all went well and I was banded on Oct 16th with no complications. Good luck to you.

I have been using my cpap since March (which was about a month before my surgery) but I was never told I had to be using it for any specific amount of time before surgery. I also did not use it for my overnight in the hospital when I had the surgery.

7 - 10 days should be plenty of time for you to get used to the machine. It is just a little awkward at first but the difference you will feel in the am is amazing!!!!
