Super Obese...What surgery is best for me??

Recommended Posts

Hey all-

I am super new to BP, and am waiting for my first surgical consult. I know that BP/DS and gastric bypass have a good track record with those who have more than 100lbs to lose, but I'm looking for your feedback. If you were super obese, what procedures have you all had success with? Other than sleep apnea and borderline high blood pressure, I'm in fairly good health. 34 years old, 437lbs and a BMI of 65.

Although I lost more than 100 pounds with my gastric sleeve, the gastric bypass is the gold standard procedure for the super morbidly obese.

Since you have no obstinate metabolic conditions such as diabetes or PCOS, the duodenal switch might not be worth the risk. The BP/DS works well in those with established metabolic disease.

Good luck to you. :)

I was SMO and had the gastric bypass. There are sleevers who've lost a ton of weight as well, though.

Of all the surgeries, DS has the best stats for weight loss and maintenance. I would have considered that, too, if my insurance covered it (it doesn't - just sleeve and bypass)

I started at 470 pounds and a BMI of 63. I had the sleeve and am down to 187 and a 25 BMI. Once I get this skin removed, it will be even lower.

Hi there, I'm at 365lbs, 33 years old. 5 ft 3. So I have about 200 lbs to lose.
I'm getting sleeved September 20th.
I chose the sleeve over the bypass ONLY because of how many more complications the bypass can have.
There's only about a 10% difference in excess weight loss between the two, and the sleeve has minimal complications associated with it.
So for me, I'd rather have the extra 20 lbs that I can work off myself, than a lifetime of possible complications.

I started at a 53 BMI. I never considered the bypass as I felt that was far too invasive. I feel like the sleeve was the right move for me as it allowed me a chance to diet and exercise that I never had without the restriction. Time will tell if it was the right choice. I may never lose "all" my weight, but I wanted to lose enough of it to have a chance to live a little bit longer and healthier.

I weigh about 395. I am in great health except for my knees. My doctor recommended a modified DS SIPS procedure. He said he would do a sleeve on me, but believed it was unlikely that I could lose enough weight for knee replacement with a sleeve alone. So that is the operation I will be having next month.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
