Things you wish you had

Recommended Posts

I won't be having my surgery until probably late September or early October. I was wondering if there were items that you wish you had taken to the hospital or items that you took that we're helpful.

2 things I brought that were really helpful, were an extension cord and a heating pad.

I was really happy to have my tablet because I was in the middle of watching a TV Series on Netflix when I went in. I was really glad that I brought a 10 foot cord with me. After I was taken to my room my husband set everything up for me. Definitely do NOT forget to bring earbuds. Luckily I remembered to bring those! I actually brought 2 pairs in case 1 went south while I was there.

Also don't forget the plug to plug in your phone/tablet cord into.

This is what I needed to see today. I'm 2 1/2 months out and all of a sudden, this monthly cycle has made me feel ravenous. I seem to be eating constantly this past week even if I'm not fully hungry. I have no idea whats wrong with my head right now, so I came here looking for some motivation to get back on track. I'm 100 pounds down, though haven't dared weigh myself this past week for fear of what I will see. Tomorrow is a new day and I cant wait to keep working toward that 1?? Goal. Anything below 200 is my goal at this point.

I took way too much to the hospital with me....but, what I did use was my ipad. I just liked to stream videos for the noise and to help drown out the hospital noises. Plus my sleeping was all messed up so it was nice in the middle of the night when nothing was on TV. I would echo the suggestions for a long charger cord. The plug in my room was pretty far away from my bed and my charger didn't reach. Also, I brought baby wipes which were nice because I didn't feel up to taking a full shower for the first couple of days.

Burt's Bees/Chapstick... was my absolute favorite thing I brought. I used nothing else I brought. I was too sore, sleeping, or walking the halls.

There will be others on here who tell you about "things," I will tell you to look up Dr. Duc Vuong, Support Surgeon on Facebook or you tube. These free videos are invaluable. Wish I would have known about him before my surgery or immediately after. He also had the Sleeve Academy (which applies to RNY or any WLS, too). Look him up.

Also, start learning about meditation. We need to get our heads right!!! We didn't get obese because we knew how to handle stress or whatever is in our life.

Good luck!

There is a thread that I came across on here a little while ago that had put together a suggested hospital checklist from suggestions of dozens of members here. I tweaked slightly, but this is what I'll use for my general guideline to plan before surgery. I think some things will be left to the wayside, but a good starting list.

I go in for bypass on 9/12. My sister is three years post op. She too said she had days like this. Where she felt hungry a good portion. She said she ate more at those times too. She also said that she would have days where she wasn't hungry. She is bw 120-125. She has lost 100 lbs. I think what you're experiencing is very normal.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
