Recommended Posts

Well, for those of you who have a pre-op diet like myself (2 weeks), I thought I'd start a new thread in advance to post your struggles, questions, advice, etc.

Good luck everyone! =)

I got my surgery date today, 11/8, and have to do 10-14 days of pre- surgery liquids. My doctor recommended Unjury. I just ordered some. It's time to get this show on the road!!

Hi,

I'm three weeks into my pre-op diet and have lost 17 pounds. My pre-op diet will last as long as it takes to get my surgery scheduled. Hopefully, I'll get a date in early November. (Scheduling snafu kept me from going ahead in late October.) Thankfully, my doctor doesn't require a liquid diet -- although I could do it. I did Optifast for 3 months once, not one bite of solid food (no cheats) in the entire time, and after the first 3 or 4 days I was never hungry.

I eat an AmazeRX Protein shake for Breakfast, a green salad w/chicken for lunch, and usually a Lean Cuisine for dinner. If I have a snack, it is a low-fat string cheese stick or carrots w/peanut butter. I keep my calories at 950-1150.

It's going pretty well, and I'm super-motivated.

I've decided to start my pre-op diet tomorrow (monday) instead of friday. I'm ready to get this weight loss started. My surgeon has a strict pre-op diet where I essentially have an option of fat free yogurt, cottage cheese, or fish/chicken with particular veggies for each meal. I practiced yesterday to see if I could handle it, and it wasn't too bad as long as I kept myself busy. I know one day is nothing compared to doing it for weeks, so we'll see how it goes. I'm curious to know what everyone else's pre-op diet is, if they have one. I know they vary a lot from surgeon to surgeon.

Even though I don't have to start my liquids only pre-op diet until 10/29, I'm starting today so I can phase it in. It doesn't make sense to me to go from food to only liquids over night. I have Unjury for at home and Atkins Advantage to take to work. I am having liquid for one meal this week, 2 meals next week and then go into full liquid until 11/8 surgery date. My sister, who had GBS 6 years ago, said she went from food to full liquids over night and by day 3, would have been happy to eat the floor! I'm hoping to avoid that......my floors are linoleum or carpet. Not the best diet!

Ok so my original surgery date was on October 19th and I was instructed to be on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks. Well I was halfway done with my diet and I got the news..... the had to reschedule me for Nov 2. I lost literally 18 pounds!!! So now I have incorporated healthy food and next week I wills tart the process all over. Oh and for those of you that are insecure about the pre-op liquid diet (if you have one) It really does get easier after the 3-4 day. I PROMISE!

I have a bad habit of jumping into things with full force and then getting bored or I fall off the "wagon" and never get back on. So in an effort to change this pattern I felt like it would be a good idea the start the pre-op diet now slowly. Anyone else like that?

I 'm drinking 1 powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury shake a day. I'm amazed that I lost 4 lbs this week. :faint: I guess it's an eye opener as to how many calories I'm really consuming in a day. Can't wait to see what happens when I really start the pre-op diet 2 wks prior to surgery.

Oh and is anyone else having trouble getting Water in. I'm haveing an aweful time of it. Suggestions would be helpful. I know that this IS a habit I really need to get into.

I started my pre-op diet today. It's just a low-carb diet with an eye on low-fat. I have one of those toasters that cooks an egg and heats a slice of Canadian bacon at the same time, resulting in a sandwich similar to an Egg McMuffin. So I made the egg and bacon without the muffin and added a slice of low-fat cheese. That was pretty filling and a good start! But I need to go to the store and stock up.

I'm almost out of diet soda and I won't be getting any more. I'm going to start drinking Propel instead, something I already like. I'm also going to get one of those coolers that plugs into the car's lighter socket so that I can have cold drinks when I commute. I realized yesterday that the reason I like diet soda is that I like my drinks cold and the carbonation makes a drink "feel" cold even when it's not. I really don't like room-temperature Water or other drinks and I don't like drinks that are diluted by ice (well, then Water would be okay.) I'm not too picky, am I? But at my age, I've learned not to try to change too many things at once and there will be enough changes just getting used to chewing more and eating more slowly.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
