Newbie/Struggling to eat

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

It's very nice to meet you all and I am looking forward to sharing my journey with you.

I'm 12 days post op and I just don't want to eat. The idea of it still seems appealing at times (and I definitely miss the bite chew swallow process) but purees and babyfood, blended Soup and Protein shakes... I'll make it to eat or go to eat it and just not want it.

Also I don't want to drink and struggling to get enough fluids. Decaf tea and fresh lime in Water is helping. I just feel like I'm way behind where I should be as far as protein and Fluid and amt I can and do eat.

Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Thank you

Protein and Water are clearly the most important. I don't know any tricks and I felt similar and just forced myself to do it (albeit very slowly).

Your appetite picks up but I still don't have any hunger (thank god).

I'd set a schedule and just commit to having X by Y.

Good luck

I literally had a 10 cc syringe. 3 full syringes is an oz. I committed to 1 oz every 15 minutes. This helped me learn what a small amount feels like in my mouth.

I know you don't want to eat but please do. I'm almost 9 months out and still have days where I can't face eating but I have to. At the beginning, after surgery I had the ambulance called to my house as my blood sugar level got so low they thought I was going into a diabetic coma and I wasn't diabetic!! That wasn't the only time my blood levels were low. Even if it's drinking a Protein Shake (funnily enough that's what I am drinking now) please please please just make yourself follow plan.

And believe me you will get to a point where you will want to eat the house down. It happens I promise. With eating take it slowly. I couldn't wait to chew it was the best feeling!! Even it if was just cheese

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
