Did anyone HATE water post op?

Recommended Posts

Pre-surgery, I was a Water guzzler. Loved the stuff. Post surgery, it was so hard to drink and it made me feel sick for a long time. I could only drink it if it had a little crystal light or something, which was weird because I never drank flavored water before surgery because I didn't care for it and didn't find it quenched my thirst. I also started drinking hot tea and still drink a lot of it. Just THIS WEEK (I'm 9 months out) I am finding I can drink a glass of water and it finally tastes delicious again and I can drink it almost as fast as I could pre-surgery. I could not be happier!!
Also, don't be like me: I had 2 uti's over the winter because I wasn't drinking enough. Even if you don't want it, you still need it. Find ways to get it down.

I'm pushing it, but its REALLY HARD!!

I still don't like plain Water since surgery. I drink a ton of diet green tea, coffee, and lemonade flavored Vitamin water. Any Fluid you are drinking counts toward your 64oz so don't feel like you have to force yourself to drink plain water.

I started with Powerade 0 today, that helps. I think I need to get some sf pudding tomorrow, that's on my list also. I could only do most of 1 Protein Shake today, maybe 2 tomorrow. Is THIS the hardest part??? I sure hope so

Sf pudding gives me a stomach ache and is like a laxative for me. Tread carefully

I was always a big Water drinker, but after surgery it tasted really bad and I had to force myself to drink it. I drank a lot of warm Decaf tea in the months post surgery. the water taste is back to normal now, thank goodness.

In the first month after surgery, I also couldn't drink cold water. It constricted my stomach right up and further reduced what I could get in. I discovered this after getting dehydrated week 1 and needing an IV.

My best advice is to focus on Clear Liquids this first week - your stomach is really inflamed right now so you may not be able to meet both your Fluid goal and your Protein Shake goal until next week or so.

Heck, I never have been a big fan of Water but I drink it. However, last winter we had a lot of rain and snow with massive flooding so now they are using megadoses of chlorine in the water. I fill up pitchers and jars of water and let them sit on the countertop to dispell the chlorine but it still tastes bad.

I have ordered a water filter and bought several zero calorie water enhancers so I am hoping this will help with the goal of 64 oz per day. Yesterday was so hot I actually ended up drinking about 80 ozs.

My WLS guy says 64 oz. of zero calories, non-carbonated, decaffeinated drinks per day. Of course, most are pretty transparent so they can even be taken right after surgery.

Try the water enhancers and see if that helps. You may be finding the water repulsive because you are smelling the chlorine.

I seem to have a weird taste in my mouth which makes the water gross. I am pushing through, doing my best.

Maybe try adding Mio to your Water. It's a sugar free flavor enhancer. I'm pre-op still, but I use Mio a lot. I would assume you could use it post op. Plus there are a ton of flavor options. Hope this helps

I use almost EVERY flavor of Mio. Even have the kids drinking a lot of Water instead of juice because of it. They have gotten to the point where they barely put it in, so I know they aren't wasting it. Water is hard if you have never done it a lot before, but yeah, try the MIO/Crystal light, and you don't need much of it either to make it bearable to drink.

I typically loved Water, but have had some issues since VSG on 12/19/16. I actually read something about "water nausea" and I believe that many of us have this but don't know it. Stay hydrated, vary what you drink. Keep pushing!!! It's worth it.

OHMYGOSH! I LOVE WATER! I'm still pre-op and I keep reading about everyone hating Water post-op and feeling sick! I'm so afraid of not wanting Water post-op. I can't even imagine feeling that way. I have twist tubes on hand to flavor my water and get Vitamins and nutrients at the same time already, even before I decided on starting the process to get the sleeve. So it's a win-win since I feel more prepared knowledge wise with consuming things I already consume (protein shakes, bars, adding Protein Powder to foods, fruit and veggie twist tubes, joint health twist tubes, immunity, and hydrating twist tubes).

I'm better with water now. It took about 4 days, I am doing better with everything at this point so far.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
