I'm pretty new here and I'm scheduled for surgery July 4th (EEK!) with Dr. Illian. I drink alcohol very rarely now...but I am a mother of an almost two year old, so occasionally a glass of wine or a nice cold beer really hits the spot. I was just curious on post-op how your body tolerates that? I know that wine may be a little easier on the belly, as long as it's not "bubbly". Just curious on what others experiences have been. Thank you for the info!

I'd opt for the wine over the beer for several reasons, mostly due to carbonation as you said but also due to gluten which I am convinced is the worst thing on this earth :). I had a glass of wine twice since surgery and had no issues, but everyone is different.

I don't drink often but when I do I just drink hard liquor on the rocks or with Water.

I have never been a beer or wine drinker really. I will have a few sips of wine with a meal if it compliments the meal.

My alcohol tolerance is exactly the same. Insanely high. I couldn't get drunk if I tried.

Discussed ad nauseam:

You'll find both sides of the argument explored and talked about in agonizing detail and breathtaking recklessness.

I'm almost 10 months out and about 2-3 times a week, I have a glass of red wine. I make sure I have room in my calories for the day for it and only after I have met my Protein and Water goals for the day!

I am 10.5 months post op and I can do a glass of wine. I don't do beer anymore at all. Liquor is strange with me because I used to drink before with no problems but I tried a mimosa for my birthday when I was 6 months post op and ended up in the emergency with anaphylaxis. It has totally changed my taste buds, my tolerance for things, and even my allergies to foods and beverages. I drink maybe once a month and i'll have a glass of wine but that's about it. I get no real joy out of drinking hard liquor anymore. I hope that helps!

I drink whiskey a couple times a month but usually do not lose any weight the weeks that I drink. :( My body seems to handle it fine but it hits me quickly and doesn't take much to keep the buzz going.

Yikes on the anaphylaxis! No allergies before surgery? Is this common?

I have been wondering about alcohol as well! I am getting married in 4.5 weeks and want to have some wine with the toasts or even a few sips of my favorite apple crown with the wedding party on the way to the reception! At that point I will be a little over 4 months post op. I have my 3 month post op appointment today but I know if I mention it to my surgeon he will tell me no as he is against drinking after bypass! I just want to Celebrate a little nothing crazy!!

My doc said to wait 6 months and to be careful in regards to addiction and nutrition. Wine is my go to.

Don't try it for the first time at your wedding! You don't want to feel sick on your special day! I am having surgery on Wednesday and know a couple of people who occasionly drink now after surgery but way after. I wouldn't risk it. Just have fun, plenty of time to drink later on!

If you trusted the surgeon enough to cut you and remove 80% of an organ, you may want to give his opinion on alcohol consumption some more thought. I had a few drinks at 5 months, but I have the sleeve and I had clearance with my surgeon. First time you drink there is a very real possibility of getting sick.

I figured it might be something I try in advance at home where if I get sick I will be ok. I'm just so unsure. Waiting to speak to my surgeon now at my 3 month post op so I will have to see what he says!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
