At what point does "normal" food start going down easily?

Recommended Posts

I'm 1 month post op. I was just wondering from other's experiences, at what point did you start being able to eat "normal" food without it hurting or being super uncomfortable. I've been trying some lunch meat, salmon, and even buffalo wings and it really hurts. I know I may be pushing it a little early and that you should add things to make it a little softer (like light mayo to tuna). But, I'm just curious when my diet will be "normal" again without pain...like how many months post-op out were you?

3 months, easier at 6 months, easier at 9 months, and at 12 months, that is about as easy as it is going to get. I haven't noticed any difference after 12 months.

It took me 3 months or so, then I could eat normal food. I am not a very adventurous eater, but I have not had a single issue with any food.

I made the mistake of trying white meat chicken today. Really bad idea.

I'm two months out and I have my good days and bad. Still very uncomfortable for me to eat but I try. chicken doesn't go down well at all yet. Neither does deli turkey. Been ok with tuna but sometimes my pouch doesn't like it. It all depends

I'm almost 2 years out and chicken is still the worst. Too dry. Moist and fatty meats are easier to eat

I was cleared for regular foods at 9 wks, and it started getting easier at around 12 wks. I'm now 5 months post op and have not found a food I have issues with.

For me rotisserie chicken goes down the easiest. More solid meats atm just fill me up instantly.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
