Here I Go (My Journey Thus Far)

Recommended Posts

The insurance lobby in this country sucks. Any doctor will tell you the long term savings from having this procedure is far more economical than the consequences down the road. I live in a state where unless you work for the government (ironic), the insurance is NOT going to cover it. It was painful for me to come up with the money to pay for it, but on the other hand, there were zero hoops to jump through. I was able to have it done quicker and without any preconditions.

Best investment I ever made.

You might have to reschedule or risk insurance not covering it. That would be extremely quick decision in one day for approval, most ins is not that fast. I would make sure the whole packet incl the psych eval goes together from your primary/surgeon's office. I think I would ask to be copied on email of it. Good luck.

Well good news. I talked with my doctor's office and I was worried for nothing. They said that's the standard letter my insurance company always issues and that my surgery was already approved. I have my surgery time scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30am and I have to be at the hospital at 8:30am.

Generally I will agree, with one caveat that one thing about working in the public sector is we have great insurance. I just picked up my pain medicine for when I go home that the doctor prescribed and it cost me $0.35 for the prescription. I also only paid an initial $10 co-pay through this process. When I worked in the private sector my health insurance barely covered anything and my deductible was ridiculous.

You are a brace lady - going it alone can work - in two weeks sleeved and relied heavily on friends and family and a maid service especially since I have a child.

I am just about ready to go
Back to work

Thanks LetGoJo!

Ahh I'm so hungry. Man I wish I wouldn't have missed lunch or had something solid for Breakfast (had Protein shake). Been on liquids all day at this point. Also milk of magnesia has not kicked in yet though I took it at 1. Not sure what that's about.

Still trying to get this Water down. Got a half a gallon to go.

Ok got an hour to go before I can't drink anything. Still have 1/4 gallon of Water left to finish. Sigh.

I'm a little nervous about how tomorrow's going to work out. I have to drop my child off at daycare at 7:30 and then head to the hospital but I have to be there by 8:30am (2 hours before surgery) which during rush hour will be pushing it since it takes an hour to get to the hospital.

Good luck on the surgery! Don't worry about traffic, I don't think a few minutes will hurt.

So this morning was rough. Got up and the milk of magnesia finally kicked in. Soo took long time in bathroom. Ended up running late dropping kid off at daycare. Now I'm in Uber on way to hospital. I decided to tell mom to meet me up there. Looks like I'm not gonna get there by 8:30. More like 8:45. Hope that's not a problem.

Made it. Got here at 8:43. Wasn't a big deal being late. Had to wait a little in reception and now I'm checking in.

Ok it's 9:36am. I have had blood drawn and gave a urine sample. My height and weight was checked. Surgery day weight is 225.1 pounds. They also checked my blood pressure. I am now in hospital gown laying in bed.

Good luck! Ask the anasthesiologist to give you something for the anxiety. Once I asked for that, I don't remember a thing until I woke up.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
