That is too bad... I never had GERD either and had a hiatal hernia at the same time as my sleeve and I still haven't had any GERD.... I am only about 10 weeks out, I hope it doesn't change.

According to the Textbook of Functional Medicine, low stomach acid predisposes one to the growth of H. pylori and is also linked to SIBO and inadequate Vitamin B12 absorption. It’s also noted that low levels of Vitamin C, and Vitamin E in gastric fluids promote the growth of H. pylori. And while there aren’t decisive studies showing that H. pylori is the direct cause of heartburn and acid reflux, there is an implied association there.

I was tested when I had my pre-op endoscopy. I think it is automatically done with an endoscopy (but I could be wrong)

In fact, she's now worse than ever. Her sleeve was in March 2015 and she's down 210 lbs but it's been a hefty price to pay. She went from unexplained vomiting a few times a week to now every day up to 5 times a day. Her GI doc has thrown up his hands, the new GI doc (same practice) says there's nothing she can do and her Bariatric Surgeon has done scopes and insists it's not the sleeve causing it. So, I do believe she had gastroparesis prior to the surgery despite her gastric emptying study showing as normal and the surgery has increased it tenfold. She's lost weight yes but what a price to pay. She is completely debilitated now and cannot work or go to school or leave the house except for worthless doctors appointments.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions that the neuropathy people may be talking about were due to their not taking their B12. In my daughter's case, she's had to get injections because she can't keep food down.

This is a really good question. We all get tested as part of the pre-op routine, but what about down the road? A lot of people are prescribed proton pump inhibitors and antacids long term after surgery and could encounter side effects.

SIBO is a major concern. It is nearly impossible to get rid of once you have it. My daughter has it and we traced it back to PPIs she was on for about 6 months.

I have gastroparesis. Had it for years before the sleeve. It came back and comes back wiht a vengance. It is what it is.

They tested my stomach when they sent it to pathology. Never had GERD before surgery. I had excess acid like almost everyone the first 6 to 9 months (took my PPI) then it stoppped no PPI.
The only time I get GERD now, I cause it. Shapewear+Underwirebra+too much food=GERD for me.

So a few days ago when I posted about vbg , I had come across a detailed medical journal about partial gastrectomies and the article stated that 30 percent of people who undergo any gastrectomy will experience gastopresis

One of the main causes of gastroparesis is damage to the vagus nerve. I have read that during vsg it can be damaged. That means the stomach muscle that contracts and moves food fails to do that and food sits too long in the stomach and makes you sick from bacteria and can become impacted. It sounds as if the conditions for vsg are ripe for this to happen based on the proscribed eating directives after surgery - dense protein/no liquids during meals/ limited complex carbs, if that nerve is damaged.

There is no cure for gastroparesis, only managed treatment w difficult outcomes. Yikes.

Amazing. There are those of us with GP who got the sleeve to fix the GP who aren't cured and a bunch who are.

We're still alive. Yes I'm more complicated and have problems, but it isn't a life stopage issue unless your mind/attitude does it.

For the person who said my posts show up as spoilers, sorry, but I believe that you should be well informed about every aspect of your health, before surgery and after surgery in this case so you will know what you may have to encounter. Better to find out now than later. i have surgery before and the complications were horrendous. It wasn't weight loss surgery but after the surgery, I started reading about how others had complications from same surgery and didn't know about certain things that could happen. Yes, weight loss surgery is great. I am planning on mine. I am pre-op but I am a reference librarian by occupation so I dig for information to stay well informed to make educated decisions. Sorry and for those who responded about their experiences and concerns, thank you. I have used intelligence to guide your decisions concerning your health. As my PCP stated, you look at the risks vs the benefits, then decide.

No idea why they shows as spoilers. I didn't even know we had a spoilers option on this forum

My grandmother and her friends always said to wear girdles, not only did it hold you in but it prevented you from over eating. That is totally true. Anything tight sitting on my torso makes it hard for me to eat. Tight new bra, and/or Shapewear is a no no if i want to eat 4 ounces. I can probably eat 2 comfortably.
