Anyone get REALLY scared close to surgery?

Recommended Posts

That's the date Im hoping to get. I work in education so I have some weeks off during summer. That's the day school ends so Im hoping to do it then for maximum recovery time.

I also work in a school, my last day is June 9 and I'm scheduled for the 14th....getting REALLY nervous

I was fine until the countdown to the pre op diet (started yesterday)

Its insane I go from excited to terrified every few hours.

I'm worried about the pre op diet too! I think I'm going to be soooo cranky :/

I am 5 days out from my surgery, and beforehand, I was on that same emotional rollercoaster. But I can tell you, the surgery is actually the easy part. I felt the pre-op liquid diet was the worst so far. After surgery, it is important to concentrate on getting in your liquids and walk, walk, walk. I was given a pain reliever on schedule during my short hospital stay even though I never asked for it. After the hospital, I have not needed anything for pain. My only issue was the gas pains. The thing that helps the most with that is to walk. My only other issue was drinking too much broth and not enough Water the 2 days after surgery. The high salt intake caused me to swell. But that was my fault for not drinking enough water and too much broth. It is normal to be nervous about the unknown. But I will tell you, for me, the surgery and post op has been a breeze compared to the pre-op. Hope this helps. Please contact me with any questions. You've made it this far. You've got this!

Thank you for the encouraging words. I don't have a pre-op liquid diet, just low carb high Protein the week before, so I guess I am lucky there I can't wait until it's over. I am ready for all of the hard work I'm going to need to do after. I am so glad that you are doing well. Keep posting about your journey!
Good luck!

I just wanted to add one thing to this fear thread, in case it is helpful. I was so worried about how my new tiny stomach would feel and that I would experience regret and sadness that I couldn't eat more. I am only a few days out from surgery, so I'm sure there will be ups and downs, but so far, I am in love with how my tiny stomach feels. I am not hungry. I crave nothing. Instead of feeling constricting, it feels like freedom.

Anyway, I wanted to share that positive thought in case it helps with your fears going in.

I so hope I feel this way! I'm going in Friday! Eek!

Help?

My surgery is in the 23rd. I wasn't put on a liquid only pre operative diet, and as the days go on I worry that I am Eating too many carbs or fat etc.

In a way I think it would be easier to have stricter guidelines.

What is going to happen if I haven't done the pre op right.

I've had no cigarettes caffeine alcohol very few carbs and sugar. I just hope little is not too much

is my anxiety justified or am I just losing my mind?

It sounds like you've made a lot of healthy choices so far. Track your food and check in with your doctor or nutritionist to confirm you are meeting the goals they'd like you to meet. Best of luck!

Thank you for writing back.

I've written a food diary, I'm seeing the dietitian tomorrow. Hopefully they will give me the thumbs up I need to stop worrying. I want this so badly, I just want to make sure I don't mess it up.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
