Hello all. I just had gastric sleeve surgery about 7 weeks ago. I am noticing I'm hungry a lot. More than usual. When I eat something I don't feel like it's in my stomach and I feel like my stomach is always empty even though I do eat small meals. Has anyone experienced this. Also, I stopped loosing weight.

Are you getting enough Water in?

I think so, I'm drinking at least one 36 oz bottle a day or sometimes more.

You should be getting at least 64oz of Water and between 60-80g of Protein a day. Also, are you waiting 30-45min after eating to drink? Drinking while eating or immediately after, flushes the food down.

If I were you, I would keep a food journal for a week or so. And include times and portions. And go over it with either a nutritionist or yoir.doctor. they will give you the best advise

Good luck!

Yeah to be honest I have a habit of eating and drinking at the same time. And I don't think I have been getting my daily protein.

I find that everyone has a different plan. Follow yours. I have found that that the standard (on this site) is 64 oz of Water, 80 grams of Protein (give or take a little), and wait 30-45 mins before drinking liquids after a meal.

Sleeved 9/6/16 and I can't drink with food. I always did pre-surgery but it makes me sick and full if I do them at the same time.

*update* so I spoke to my doctor about what I was experiencing. He told me it was normal. First of all I have a fast digestive system, even before my surgery, and when he did the surgery it's even faster. He said I was like in the 20% of people that have this freakishly fast digestive system. And as far as not loosing weight, it's normal as well. He told me to constantly eat small things throughout the day.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but this is the first time I have read about a recommendation to eat constantly all day long. This sounds like grazing? How does one find out how fast their digestive system is? I would like to know how fast mine is. I think mine must be slow like a turtle because it takes me forever to lose weight.

Not grazing like small meals at least 6 times during the day. And I had a gastric emptying scan before my surgery to determine how fast my digestive system was.

Oh ok. That scan sounds interesting. Do you lose weight at a fast pace when you digest food so fast?

I don't think so. Because I can tell you I am at a stall right now. Meaning I haven't been loosing weight for a while. But that's normal, your body is freeking out because you aren't eating a lot of calories anymore, so the metabolism is slow.

I'd really work at avoiding drinking while eating. If you got a fast tract then adding fluids into the mix is probably going to speed things up all the more. I get that same feeling of times of not feeling like I ate anything. Denser Proteins like tuna or chicken definitely sit heavier in my stomach. Things like yogurt and cottage cheese pass through the system quicker than other foods.

Are you tracking your food? If not it's a good idea to start to know for sure where you are at with calories and carbs. Lot of things can contribute to a stall. Not getting enough Water, Protein, or calories can be a big factor in that. May seem counterproductive but keeping your calories too low and inhibit weight loss.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
