Oh No I'm Really Hungry

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 days Post Op. gained 13 lbs when I was released from hospital. Full of Fluid. I woke up this morning back to my pre surgery weight. Took five days to get rid of all the fluid they pumped into me. On clear liquid diet and am so hungry. Is this normal? I'm getting worried. I'm not sure I can make another week feeling this hungry.

I don't know if it's " normal " .. But I was ravenous! I thought I was gonna scream uncontrollably. or eat something I shouldn't... 😝 it does get a little better as your meal plan includes more choices... In the meantime, force yourself to drink until hunger goes away .. Good luck! 😉

P.S. don't watch food commercials 😨

Pumped Fluid into you? What kind of surgery did you have? You talking the IV?

My experience was not even close to yours. Not hungry in the slightest. Are you sure you aren't just having head hunger because the majority of your stomach was removed and with that the ghrelin which causes hunger. So I'm not following as to why you could be hungry unless it was head hunger. The day I came home (2 days after surgery) I only manged to ingest half a bottle of a small Gatorade all day and was perfectly okay with that. I didn't even crave food until almost 6 months after surgery.

I read there are numerous nerves running from your brain to your stomach, and when they sever those nerves in surgery, it takes your brain a couple weeks to realize 3/4's of your stomach is missing. I believe you're in the head hunger phase. Phantom hunger pains sent from your brain to fill up that missing part. It should go away pretty soon.

Thank you for all the responses. I had some blood pressure issues after surgery. Would have high BP then drop. They said I was dehydrated and really pushed the fluids through my IV. I went into surgery at 201 lbs. came home at 213 lbs. took five days to loose the 12 lbs. I'm having no other issues. I'm getting down my fluids and Protein. This is one determined lady. I sip all day. Just find I'm hungry. Your responses have helped. I forgot about head hunger. That makes sense. I will push through but looking forward to soft diet. I'm 63 years old and have always had a ridiculous appetite. I'm sure I will have to fight my head a bit. I only stayed in the hospital one night. I'm very healthy just obese. Looking forward to the next chapter of my life.

Thank you again for all your responses. It helps.

Did your surgeon prescribe you an anti-acid medicine like Prevacid? Sometimes hunger can be caused by acid in your pouch.

I had RNY and am on prescription strength Prevacid for 6 months.

I'm 2 months post op and my hunger is returning also it scares the crap out of me I feel like I've been eating so much

That's what I'm afraid of. I was told to measure your food to make sure you don't over eat. I have two friends who have had the sleeve procedure one is hungry all the time and has to stay vigilant with her diet and one who is never hungry and has to remember to eat. I'm scared too.

17 days post op. I just started soft food. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I'm only down 7 lbs and have been stalled for the last three days with my weight remaining the same. I am hungry off and on during the day, even though I am drinking Water or Protein Drinks all day. I will add that I stopped taking estrogen pills 30 days before surgery and have made the decision to stay off them. The hot flashes are brutal. Could this stall me? If so I'll get back on the estrogen.

I think you should consult your dr and nutrition team. Nothing like that even remotely happened to me. I've never heard of anyone gaining right after surgery either.

Maybe they can provide more insight. Good luck to you though.

I called and was told I became dehydrated the first night after surgery. So they increased my IV fluids. I think the nurse got carried away. LOL. I came home 13 lbs heavier. Took ten days to get rid of the Fluid. It's been five weeks post surgery I've lost, not counting the 13 lbs of fluid, 9 lbs. seems low to me.

I have appointment scheduled on Monday the 16th. I'm hoping for some help. I'm 64 years old and my BMI was 35, post surgery. I'm very disappointed at how slow I'm loosing. I'm taking in about 600 calories and getting in between 50 to 60 grams of Protein daily.

I do 64 oz of fluids daily too

Just so slow. My friend lost 20 lbs her first month. So my expectations were hoping for that too. Oh well.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
