So How Many Of You Guys Want To Actually Get Down To A Normal BMI?

Recommended Posts

The assumption here is assuming the same body type for everyone. I have a very large frame, and even if I had 10% body fat, puts me at a BMI of 29. I really don't care about BMI as it is such a non-unique way to determine ideal weight it just doesn't matter to me. I just want to be healthy and fit, I can careless about what weight or BMI that ends up being.

You know, I haven't had the weight loss surgery yet but about 7 years ago I became an officer for the dept of corrections. I kind of created a couple life goals and one of them was to have a 6 pack at some point in my life and be able to do pull ups with ease (I have never done one) I think that guys aren't really focused on the numbers as much as how we feel or look. At least that is my case.

My current BMI is 27 and my body fat percentage is 25. I'm a 6', 49-year-old man who started the process at 410#, with RNY surgery in March 2016, and now weigh 207#. My original goal weight was 200#. This is where I was 15 years ago when I lifted weights and looked my best before becoming morbidly obese in recent years. However, now that I'm almost there, I don't look good naked, lol. My loose skin issues aren't too bad compared to others (I weight-trained as I lost), but it sags a bit in the abdomen, inner-thighs, butt, and under my chin. I've read that often what we perceive as loose skin is actually deflated fat underneath that clings to the skin, and the best way to get rid of it is to go for 10% body fat (for men, 20% for women), at which point you can determine whether contouring surgery is needed. I have a ways to go as I focus on body composition instead of weight. Hopefully, with my past weight training experience, I can build up enough muscle to skip skin removal. Fingers crossed.

Interesting.

I'm two weeks pre-op and it's too early for me to say. I think it's hard to set a goal based purely on weight or BMI, no matter how high or low. I can easily visualise how I want to look but I don't know what that is in kilos or pounds.

I think doctors will always set expectations at lower weight loss levels. If clinical evidence suggests you lose, say, 70% of excess weight then that explains why their figure will always nudge higher. In truth there's likely to be a significant distribution of results either side of that number and given the complexity of the success factors they're safer predicting the average.

I want my shoulders and my V shape back and to look good in particular clothes. I want to be able to mountain bike 20 or 30 miles and love it again. I want chafed thighs to be a thing if the past and to reacquaint myself and my wife with my penis. Those are targets that I can get my head round.

All that said my gut feel is to go hard for 'normal'!

My goal is to be able to walk into a regular store and buy and regular normal priced pair of blue jeans and a normal shirt. What ever weight or bmi that is. My goal is not to look like a skeleton. My goal is to have a relationship with food which is manageable and still allows me to enjoy life. Life has food in it, everywhere! But my food relationship will allow me to manage it.

This the same for me, but that said I am still targeting a healthy BMI. I honestly can't remember ever being a normal BMI except when I had poorly controlled Graves disease. I was quite thin but I also looked quite unhealthy according to my wife. The pounds eventually crept up to unacceptable levels once my thyroid was medically destroyed. I am hoping I can visit that BMI again but under healthier circumstances.

I'm with you, my goal is 185 lbs. which was my pre-marriage weight, it is also 60% EWL from my starting weight. My stretch goal is 175, I can't imagine myself getting anywhere near a normal BMI.

My goal was 250 pounds. Once I got there, it wasn't like I can just go ahead and stop now. I kept going and am down to 173. My BMI is 23.5 and right in the middle of the normal range and yet all my doctors tell me to gain weight now. I'm not sure what to make of BMI. You can be healthy and normal with a BMI over 25 and be unhealthy under 25.

I've been here since 2014 and one of the things I always find odd is how so many people chose goal weights that are still classified as overweight. It seems to be rather split among the sexes too. Not sure why people don't want to get down below a 25. Like they somehow think that they won't look good or something? I finally got to a normal BMI and even I want to go lower because I can still see things I need to improve.

This is an awesome question that I have thought long and hard about, in the attached picture I weigh 260lbs. Osease by the BMI standards (Only two years ago BTW) now I am 6'-2" and according to Mr. BMI I am only suppose to weigh 182Lbs.. should I set my goal at 186? or would my 200 goal be enough?

P.S. I am the one on the right!!

I chose a normal BMI as a goal but it might not be possible due to extra skin. My optional BMI puts me at about 190.

It’s not healthy to be in a relationship with numbers! To start its a way of measuring success BMI and lbs, but when you get to where you are happy and healthy, ask yourself what your goal is realistically.you can lose to much and be unhealthy, not enough and your still overweight and that’s not what your after either. Numbers are just that. Might work if everybody was the same body type and height, but not worth a **** in real life. I’m shooting for 315 lbs looked damn good there 18 years ago. As soon as I’m there I’ll probably find that I’m not even close, thanks to Father Time ,cable tv,marriage and Taco Bell! And readjust my goal to match my correct body image. Sorry if I went off on a tangent.

I’m happy at mid 225-230 I’m a size large in shirts which fit nice and fitted, and a 36-38 pant size. I work in a prison and don’t want to be too small. Plus the wife likes me at that size, so I’m good.

A normal BMI for me is about 190 as I am 6'4" I am sure going to strive to get there, but I think I could be happy and healthy so long as I stay below 215. Still, 190 is the aim. That's going to put me at almost 170 pounds lost. I am going to lose an adult male worth of weight ... LOL

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
