I was sleeved on 2/6. My surgeon informed me ahead of time that I would have a JP Drain, I think it's pretty much their preference on wether you will have one or not. Mine was in for a total of 8 days, removed on my 1 week post-op visit (2/14). At first it wasn't too bad but after about 3 or 4 days it became incredibly painful. Basically it's a tube just sticking out of your abdomen and your body pretty much decides that it shouldn't be there and starts to fight it. My drain site became very red and infected looking but after talking with my surgeons nurse was told it's normal. This was by far the worst part of my surgery, not only was it disgusting but the pain radiated from the site towards the end. However, as soon as he removed it there was instantaneous relief, it felt so good not having it jutting out of my side haha. From what I've read everybody has different experiences with these things so maybe if you have one it won't be nearly as bad. Good luck!

I had a Jackson-Pratt drain and wasn't expecting it until the surgeon referred to it right before the surgery. It stayed in until my first appointment 10 days post-op. It was weird and kind of yucky to take care of, but I didn't have any problems with it. Just look online for videos on how to care for it. I figured a way to hold it up while I was taking a shower by tying it to a ribbon and looping that around my neck.
There were four people who had sleeve surgeries the same day as me and the only other person with a drain had a lap-band conversion, like me. So perhaps it has something to do with that? Her colleague did that follow-up visit and I forgot to even ask. It did take quite a while (3 weeks?) for the drain hole to finally close up so I had to bandage it for a while.
The surgeon used a Tegaderm dressing film on it starting day two and she gave me a few to take home, but I found that I needed to buy more. Wish I'd known that because I only found one pharmacy that had them and I wasn't really up for that hunt. If you know you'll have a drain, you might want to talk to your surgeon to see if you should buy them online beforehand. And get the large ones!

Thanks

My surgeon as well as the other 2 surgeons in the hospital ALL use the drain to make sure leaking stops. It is the nastiest feeling when they take it out. it's slippery and gross. That's the grossest thing i've ever experienced and it's the worst feeling i've had since surgery. Although, it is quick, maybe it's just me and my disgust by it lol. Most surgeons do it though!! good luck

Seriously, it take 10 seconds to remove, probably less. Anyone can put up with grossness for 10 seconds.

I also had a drain tube. I had a total of 4 incisions and my drainage incision was in the center of my upper stomach. I had surgery on a Monday, they took the tube out the next day before discharge.
It didn't hurt coming out, but felt very gross when pulled out.
As others have said it will depend on your surgeon if they utilize it and for how long.

I had my surgery on 12/30 and I had a drain while in the hospital. All 3 surgeons in our program use drains on all sleeve surgeries. It was removed the day of discharge. They use it to monitor for leaks and to prevent clots forming around the staple line. It was uncomfortable but temporary.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
