Vacation 3-4 weeks post op?

Recommended Posts

My surgery keeps getting pushed back by the doctor's office (the doc who determines if we're ready to meet the surgeon had a medical issue a couple weeks ago and hasn't been cleared to return yet - my appt with her has been rescheduled twice, adding 3 weeks to my process so far. I'm supposed to go back next week). I have a vacation scheduled for April and I'm worried I won't be more than 3-4 weeks post at that point based on their timeline estimate. (2-4 weeks to meet surgeon, then insurance approval, etc).

It's not a crazy busy vacation, it's just to one of those Water park hotels - lots of wandering around watching my kids do stuff, with a hotel room an elevator ride away if I need a nap ;) My husband will drive. Do u think that will be OK at only 3-4 weeks post? I know I won't be able to swim but that's OK - I have hated swimsuits for so long that I tended to sit out while my kids swam anyways.

I never thought I'd still be pre-op almost a year after deciding to get sleeved. I started with this office in May/June and this is just exhausting!!

I think you should be fine to do some walking around. I just hit my 4-week mark yesterday and I've had plenty of energy/mobility since about 6 days post-surgery. Again, everyone is different, but I think by 3-4 weeks post you likely won't have any trouble walking around. I think the biggest problem might be sticking to the diet/protein shakes at that point. If you have a plan in place to be able to make your shakes while on vacation, that will help. And depending on how much walking/running around you do, you might get exhausted more easily. But I could walk 2 miles now if I chose to (though so far I've only been doing 1 mile at a time due to unrelated foot pain).

To be sure, you might just schedule the surgery for after the vacation. That way there isn't a time crunch.

I'm a week post op. So far I've been very blessed and haven't experienced any nausea or gas pains. I am very tender around abdomen and tired. I would say schedule vacation for after vacation. I don't think you will get to enjoy it right after surgery. You'll be out of your comfort zone. Want to sleep. Riding in car for long distance will be no fun. You won't enjoy vacation and the rest of the family probably won't either.

I had a business trip at 4 weeks post op and it went fine. I was even able to swim in the hotel pool. It is hard to know how you will feel, everyone is different. The hardest part of my trip was eating, it would be good to find a hotel with a mini kitchen kind of set up as it is hard to eat out at that stage. I was cleared by my surgeon for soft foods right before my trip but it is still hard

Thanks for the replies. I will have to play it by ear and see how fast the process moves after my appt next week, then decide from there. If it's less than 4 weeks I'll probably push it off until after vacation (which is disappointing beyond words after waiting this long already, but such is life!)

I had my sleeve 2/23/16 and went on vacation 3/17/16. Eating was an issue! I also got tired more quickly, because I couldn't eat much. I was transitioning to soft food at that time, and it's hard to find things like ricotta cheese with marinara when you go out! Luckily, we rented a condo and I was able to eat things like apple sauce and yogurt, at the rental. My advice would be to push the surgery off until after vacation. Have fun! Eat, drink, etc. and enjoy it. It will not be as fun if you have the surgery before, I guarantee.

I took a four day vacation exactly one month after surgery. I didn't really have any trouble. We made sure that we ate at a lot of places that had Soup and sandwiches so that I could choose Soup or lunchmeat. For Breakfast I brought Protein shakes with me. I know one dinner was a chicken taco in a bowl from taco bell (no shell, shredded chicken). My diet was just switching to regular foods (my surgeon's plan is easy). For the most part I picked the food and had a few bites and my husband and I shared meals because I couldn't eat much.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
