Who had gerd before sleeve or developed gerd after?

Recommended Posts

After reading a few posts about Gerd I'm getting nervous about the sleeve vs bypass. I'd like honest answers regarding the sleeve and Gerd . I've had at different times in my life and it's been controlled by diet . Surgery in two weeks!

I had GERD prior to sleeve and now it is worse. I have to take Dexilant every day and for the first 2 weeks after surgery, I had to take liquid Carafate to help control it. Hopefully it will get better in time. I'm 3 1/2 months post-op.

No, I don't regret the sleeve. GERD is treatable. I initially wanted the bypass but I have an auto immune disease and I often have to take steroids. You can't have steroids with the bypass so my surgeon said I would have to have the sleeve.

I have had acid reflux for years and years. I took Prilosec for quite a while and then got a prescription for protonix. After the sleeve surgery the GERD is better - possibly because of diet and eating far less than before - but I still take protonix every day. There are so many benefits from having the surgery that make it worthwhile even if you still have GERD afterwards. For example, I am no longer diabetic, my blood pressure is normal for the first time in years, my cholesterol is good, and my asthma is much improved. I still have arthritis in my knees and hips but even that is less painful than it used to be. Try to look at the big picture and how your life will change for the better with the surgery.

Developed it after. Some days it can be bad, sometimes it disappears for days. I thought spicy foods might be the culprit but for me it's fatty foods and sugar. Serves me right when I indulge. LOL I don't regret the surgery however. I take an antacid and make better choices.

I came here and voila the topic I am looking for! Today is 2 weeks after surgery and the gerd is being heard loud n clear! Wth??? I never suffered with this before but a few nights I notice I couldn't sleep and wondered what it was! I described it to hubby who knew right away as he suffers With heartburn! I took a tums tonight but then read I shouldn't have... I see my nutritionist in a few days and we will get to the bottom of this! Annoying as heck....

I never had acids before my vsg at all...
Unfortunately I have developed it after :(
I don't like taking the medication as I remember a Dr on the radio saying how bad it is to take long term.
All I hope is , is that my brain remembers that my stomach doesn't need so much acid anymore and adjusts itself.

Sally628, the gerd doesn't negate the surgery! There are still way more pros... gerd is just an annoyance!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
