What am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

I am now 2 months post op as of 11/29/2016 and I feel like a failure. I am only 37 lbs down. I was 350 lbs on surgery date and I am now 313, but I feel like I should have lost more at this point. I feel like I keep stalling a regular basis.

What am I not doing right? I work out four times a week at the gym for an hour. I always get my daily Protein and Water requirements. I take all of my Multivitamins and Calcium supplements.

I always consume between 700-800 calories yet my weight loss seems stalled or really slow. I feel like I am not where I should be weight wise two months out. I hate feeling discouraged. Any advice?

all of us are different. I can remember comparing myself and my weight loss to others in my group and always feeling I was not enough. I finally figured out that I was just a slow loser. some folks lose fast and I must admit I resented that for a time. however. my sponsor reminded me of the story of the turtle and the rabbit. the slow turtle did win and so will you. if you are doing what they tell you to do you are all right. remember that if you had not had the surgery you would probably be up to 375. just do the next right thing and it will work out for you. we are here when you need to talk

Good Lord people! At two months out, I had lost 27 lbs. I started at almost 400 lbs. I have lost over 200 lbs and am currently at a normal BMI. You folks are average if not above. 37 lbs in two months is *not* slow. People lose at all different rates for all different reasons (age, gender, starting BMI, metabolism rate, amount of muscle mass they have, whether or not they lost a lot of weight pre-surgery, etc). Yes, there are a few who drop 30 lbs the first month, but they are the exception, not the rule. Most seem to lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month, and then around 10-12 lbs a month for awhile, and then it drops from there (if you start out as a "lightweight", you'll lose even slower). You need to adjust your expectations. If you stick to your program, the weight *will* come off!

Thank you Catwoman7 I needed to read that! I had my surgery on the 25th of this month and I know that I struggle with realistic expectations. I really want to do a good job and follow all the rules but at times it is a struggle. I can't believe that my hunger is back and I'm only one and a half weeks out! Is that normal????

I suppose it's not impossible, but that would be pretty rare. Are you on some sort of antacid? I've read stomach acid can mimic hunger. My surgeon had me on prescription Prilosec for several months after surgery.

My hunger came back as well - but that was at 5 or 6 months out (I was hoping I'd be one of the lucky ones who never got it back, but alas....the vast majority of us do!) But yea - having it come back at 1.5 weeks out would be pretty unusual.

I thought I was hungry too until I was prescribed Prevacid for reflux and my hunger was gone. It was acid, not hunger

This a 1000 times.

It's so important to adjust expectations otherwise you're going to feel like a failure. This is even more important when you're starting at a comparatively low BMI.

Someone with a BMI of 55 or 60 will lose weight faster than someone with a BMI of 40 or 35 or less. You'll also lose weight slower if you have lost quite a bit of weight pre-surgery or if you're a revision and already had a substantial EWL in the past.

Seriously, people are setting themselves up for depressed mood with these kind of expectations. (I have to remind myself of this as well and need to follow my own advice here, currently stalling since a few weeks.)

Great advice by all and thanks for the reminder because I'm a so called "light weight" lol and thinks have been slow and yes frustrating in comparison but I too had to stop comparing and remind myself EVERY LOSS is a gain:) so I'm thankful for every loss and keep moving forward trusting the process as I workout and follow guidelines.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
