Does anyone regret surgery

Recommended Posts

I also had post op complications I had to sit at the cancer center every day getting infusions for four hours and it usually ended up being closer to five- by the time they got me back and got my iv in and all that and the cancer center was two hours away so I spent nine hours a day away from my house and kids for two weeks until o could properly get in fluids and I also was in the hospital for five days on top of those 14 days

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, good and bad, on this thread. It really helps people like me who are in the planning phase of things.

I agree with @@HurricaneU that the weight loss is usually the easier part, but it's the weight maintenance that's difficult. I would see WLS as a tool to help maintain a loss. I do have to admit I would be upset if I lost slowly, though. So I understand why that's so frustrating. :( I guess that is something I should get prepared for in case it happens to me.

As for people who look "tired" or older after losing a lot of weight... I guess I figure I'm getting this surgery as a way to be fitter and do things I can't do right now. Shovel snow, climb up into the attic, set up/break down during camping, help my friends move, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. So maybe I will look like a tired, saggy old hag afterward but as long as I get strong enough to live the way I want to live physically I will be OK with that. :P

No regrets whatsoever. Had an easy, quick recovery. I can eat decent amounts with restriction, have had no vomiting or anything like that. My skin and hair have never looked better. No Hair loss, and complexion is flawless eating so clean with all this Water. I'm loving going from a 22 to a 16. I have gone down a bra band size, and my booty is shrinking, which I and hubby miss, but I'm at the gym hard now trying to bring it back.

I only wish I had known to do the surgery 10 years ago and not wasted some of the best years of my young life being self-conscious and overweight with esteem issues.

I've heard that the tired, "look of death" appearance goes away after a few months.

I'm only a few days post op, but I was already able to stop taking my diabetes meds and I take only half a dose of 1 of my previous 2 meds for high blood pressure. So no regrets for me!

The reason people look sick a day unhealthy is because they ignore nutrition.

Take your Vitamins, meet and exceed your Protein goals and you will glow right on up.

People that use surgery as a way to starve themselves end up looking terrible.

I look easily 10 years younger than my age, and this is what other people tell me not my opinion.

I also eat high fat which helps with looking good and having nice skin.

I haven't had my surgery yet so you can discount my opinion if you want to. I am getting this surgery not because I can't lose weight, but because I can't keep it off once I lose it. It's awesome that you've lost 25 pounds, but your chances of keeping it off for 5 years is somewhere between 2-4% without surgery. Bariatric surgery gives the best chance available today to keep the weight off long term because it's the only thing that resets your body's weight set point to a lower level giving you a better chance at keeping it off. Set point is the high weight your body will fight tooth and nail to get back to. It's why it's so hard to maintain weight loss otherwise. You can still gain the weight back if you don't change your habits around food and exercise, but at least you have a chance to keep it off. 2-4% is no chance at all.

My question exactly. I have a friend that had a surgery in '09, lost a bunch of weight, looks really good, but still cannot eat much. Cannot enjoy times out with friends, because if she ate a bit too much she feels sick and has to sit for 20 min to digest it. I'm wondering is this the experience for everyone?

Sent from my Pixel using the BariatricPal App

I enjoy being out with friends. My enjoyment just doesn't involve mass quantities of food now. Yes I eat but I find that I'm more involved in the conversation than I've ever been and I feel like I get so much more out of the time that I've spent.
How about drinks? Beer, vodka, wine?

Sent from my Pixel using the BariatricPal App

You can drink if you want.

Hard liquor doesn't have carbs so that is better than beer. Take it neat or with a low carb mixer.

I don't really drink but I have had a few drinks since surgery.

Wine is too acidic for early post op.

Drinking alcohol is counter productive go trying to lose weight but there is nothing to stop you. It just isn't suggested.

How could I regret getting my life back?

I'm down 92 pounds, from a size 22 to a size 6. I'm active, healthy, and my self esteem has shot up. I was in constant pain while fat. I couldn't keep up with my kids. Now, I'm the mom I wanted to be. We've gone skiing and ice skating and trampolining together.

I also don't miss out on good food and good parties. I just eat less and drink less (which is fine because alcohol hits so much harder now).

I lost about 44 lbs in 3 months without surgery. Did that stop me from getting sleeved? hell no!!

I am learning to embrace my sleeve. My problem has always been quantity not quality. I ate a lot of healthy food. And a lot of starches too..

My sleeve allows me to eat a whole lot less of that without battling hunger. Now it's just Proteins Proteins and more proteins.. now I've lost another 30...

I looked a bit pallid after surgery, but now I am feeling and looking better. I know exactly the 'death warmed over' look you're afraid of, I know someone who got sleeved and had that look. But I also know that person had a lot of problems with Protein and nutrition. The Protein and Water goals are SOOOO important. I'm only 27 days post-op, but I feel good 90% of the time. 10% is me over-doing it or eating too soon after drinking. I have absolutely no regrets from having this surgery--even when everyone was having steak at Christmas and I had Soup. I enjoyed and savored every flavor.

I agree, even thou I am not scheduled until maybe April for surgery, my nutrionist has me taking Vitamins now, she stated its best to have you system at its possible best before surgery, but also to eat more Proteins now so it will be in your system for better recovery.

I had surgery on 12/19/16. I am currently going through a period of surgery regret. It's not because of not being able to eat large quantities anymore since I didn't really do that before hand. It's not about not being able to drink since I don't drink. For me my regret currently is because of two things mainly.

1. I'm losing too slowly for my taste. I feel like I butchered myself for nothing since I could lose faster just by eating low carb.

2. What weight I have lost seems to have all come from my boobs. I am not pleased with how my body looks already.

Will I forever regret the surgery? Doubtful. But right now that's how I feel.

That's my concern I've lost weight already and now I'm questioning it this is right for me because it seems so much to follow

So I've been working out with a trainer and eating right lost 25 pounds so far I have surgery next month and I'm questioning do I still want it I know many people that got it and they look sick and unhealthy I was wondering do anyone regret having surgery ???

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Surgery is not for everyone. If you feel you would be successful doing a life change. That's great.

I have dieted on my own for years. My weight yo yoed. Surgery is a long term weight loss outcome for me. I'm two and a half years out. I'm still maintaining. I'm now another person you have met that has had surgery. Let me know if you think I look sick and unhealthy.

I agree with the other people that have posted about nutrition and vitaimins. working out will help build muscle instead of burning it.

The goal is healthy whatever that looks like for you...

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
