February Sleevers -- Let's Do This Together

Hi All! I'm one week out as well and was a bit hesitant to post my comment in hopes of not discouraging anyone. I'm choosing to share to say that it does get better... I had terrible gas pains the day of surgery which caused terrible chest pain. I had nausea that required additional treatment outside of what they normally prescribe. While in-house I was not able to drink any liquids because I just couldn't tolerate them. Once I got home it wasn't any better and on top of it, weakness set in. I also was not able to stand the smell of food, it made me horribly nauseous. Today is the first day I feel somewhat back to my usual self. But again, saying all that to say I wanted to give a fair picture of my experience, but also know that it gets better! It's only uphill from here! Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for sharing your experience, Renee2017. I had my sleeve surgery on Feb 15th, and I've been struggling, especially since getting home. In the hospital, I didn't run into many problems-- yeah, the gas pain was not fun, and I was terribly nauseous the first day, but I felt ready to come home and move forward. My doctor and nurses all said I was doing great and on track...Then I got home on Friday. Since then, the nausea has returned full-throttle (plus some), I'm struggling to drink anything at all, the gas pain is horrible, and I'm terribly, terribly weak. I needed to hear today that I'm not alone in the immediate struggles post-surgery. Thank you again for sharing-- it really, really helps to know it gets better from here!

@JBlue, please stay encouraged... it does absolutely get better. I wanted to share because I haven't come across many experiences in which people shared the not so nice side of things. Again, not to discourage anyone but I like to be prepared knowing all the possibilities. One thing I would encourage you to do is ask your practice if you can have phenergan for the nausea. It's the only thing that helped me. It will make you sleepy but if you're like me... you can use the rest right about now. I'm now able to get my fluids in along with 60 grams of Protein (using the Premier Protein shakes). Once you start to get a little bit of you back... you realize you've got this!!! On another positive note... I weighed in for the first time today and I'm down 15lbs from my starting weight. Just a little something to make me smile! Hang in there... you're doing an awesome job!

Starting my liquid diet today. I technically don't have to start until Monday but wanted to start over the weekend in case I have any headaches. I'm a teacher and there's no way I can deal with the kids and a headache!

I had an in bed Migraine for 3 days. You'll be glad you started early

Congrats! You got this! [emoji4]

Thank you it went so much better than I ever thought possible. To be honest I asked a group of friends to really pray for me and let me tell you they did.
Day one/two - pain/some nausea
Day three and beyond- no need for any kind of pain or nausea meds. I'm able to drink and eat prescribed full liquid diet. No Constipation. Can sleep on any side or back. Absolutely no complaints!

Well it's the morning after surgery for me I'm blessed to have no complications. Walked twice yesterday and luckily haven't experienced blowing or gas yet. Mostly just layed around and slept. How is everyone else doing?

My surgery was last Wednesday. I have dropped 22 pounds since pre op diet! (3 weeks total) I'm so happy! I'm sleeping better than I ever have, thinking more clearly, having more energy. This has been the best decision of my life. Only complication in hospital was drainage tube causing major pain, and then some soreness out of surgery but I called the doc up and got that fixed. And now I just feel fantastic! How's everyone else doing?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
