Why is weight loss a one size fits all scenario here? Different goals call for different approach

Recommended Posts

I don't think anybody cares what somebody eats 6 months or a year out. After cleared by your doc to 'try any food' ... Have at it. When I read constructive criticism from vets it usually someone days post op eating a porkchop or taco or drinking wine when they are still in the liquid part of their post op diet. That is never going to be cool nor will vets ever coddle or validate that behavior. EVER! It is potentially life threatening. When I see that kind of advice from vets am thinking 'yes' and hope all the newbies and pre-ops are paying attention. On the other hand if you stay at goal or under eating cupcakes good for you! I am happy for you and jealous. But the reality is I will fail if I made cupcakes and pizza a regular part of my diet. All I want newbies to know is that they might be lucky like the OP or unlucky like me. Thread lightly until you know for sure.

Well... there are a few vets who will validate it, but...

Yes, yes! By George, she's got it! I think she's got it!

Seriously though, this whole thread is a mind %#*&. Can't help but feel like we're being trolled here.

Sorry guys, I retract. It wasn't my intended tone, or really my intended meaning of what it blew up as, I forget just how popular these 'types of controversial threads can get, I take blame in precipitating that. The best we can do is support each other in a positive way, and not a negative and perhaps harm causing casual attitude I have portrayed here. Weight loss and weight related issues and habits are serious as they effect every aspect of our lives. I have personally still hav a lot of growing up to do in this area. I am reading through some of the long term studies of weight loss success, and yeah everyone- I am an uninformed a$$ clown. Do your own research, listen to your doctors, and don't listen to the 'trolls' though I didn't mean to be trolling, I am simply misguided. Good luck everyone and god bless

@@mrsNilla my starting weight was 200. I did not have much to lose. I do not wish to do damage to people that are following the plan, that's great. But some are discouraged from wls because they do not want to change their eating. I do think one can achieve good results with or without surgery if they focus on portion seizes. Post op, I am still surprised with how much food people are served in restaurants, even kids meals are shocking. The French don't get fat, and they eat bread, cheese, and pastries. The secret? Portion size. I guess you could say I am living the French way of life in a very fat America.

As someone who is almost a year further out than you and about 25 pounds over my goal weight right now, I can honestly say the moderation thing you are talking about has stopped working for me. I found this forum to see if i can get support to get back on track. I am able to eat more than before, and have found myself eating too much of the sweets and carbs like Cookies and crackers. I was really good about staying away from that stuff the first couple of years but started the moderation thing and it kind of spiraled out of control. Because I wouldn't gain for so long when I would eat sweets and carbs, I found myself constantly pushing the limits and now am facing a 25 pound gain. I honestly think if I would have tried to stay on the straight and narrow a bit better and not given into the moderation lie people use so much regarding surgery, I would still be where I need to be weight wise. I think it catches up to us eventually and we really need to watch what we eat a large majority of the time. It almost seems there were metabolism changes that happened with me, where stuff I could get away with before, I no longer could and would see the scale climb instead.

If we couldn't moderate food before, then what makes us think we could after surgery? Portion Control just isn't enough after a certain amount of time in my opinion.

It seems the only answer your looking for is validation on your way to approached weight loss. You seem defensive. A bit overly sensitive about telling someone to follow their plan......I'm not sure why.

Is following a plan too much for a Dr. to ask of his patients? The goal is healthy. Whatever that looks like for each of us.

I'm not the plan police. We are all adults. Its tough to make good decisions for ourselves. NOT my job to make them for other people.

If your happy with your outcome that's great. I'm also happy with mine. ;)

Supporting each other is a great thing. By the way, you missed the Idaho Bariatric Christmas party in Meridian tonight. :-)

@@Greensleevie thank you for that, It puts it into perspective to have someone further out, I knew this honeymoon period is too good to last. I too have felt my stomach getting bigger, I can eat more with ease. I am terrified of gaining it back, but I am also terrified of changing anything because I am already at goal...

I'm 4 months post-op and have been on this forum from the beginning. I've found it helpful to know there is more than one way to do everything. I think the one point that seems to be clear is that everyone has their own, individual journey.........we each need to find our way.......find what works work us. I have found everyone to be respectful, polite and friendly. I learn something from every person who chooses to post information about their journey.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season.......however you choose to Celebrate

I've actually found this discussion very interesting. At about six months I'm cleared for all foods. My counselor is pushing the moderation approach, my NUT is just worried about Protein, and the majority of folks on this site push a strict low carb approach. I am worried that I am not getting enough nutrients in from food versus supplements.

Here's a perfect example! Read the post below and decide if you think this person should be told to just eat what they want??? They are risking their life!....at one week post op it is a pretty much one size fits all....because at that point it's not about weight loss.

I was just talking about this with my parents last night, when they asked if I thought my aunt should get the surgery.

Right now I am fully aware that I'm in the honeymoon period... from everything I've read and been told, the weight will practically come off regardless of what I do. What will prove whether or not I've made the right changes in my life is what happens after the honeymoon period is over.

So while I cannot do low-carb/ketogenic, period, and what I have been doing seems to be working, I simply won't know for another year to 18 months if it really has, or if it was just the honeymoon glow.

So I'm VERY careful advising people to do what I'm doing. The majority of the successful vets have NOT done what I'm doing, which makes me very cautious about saying my way is better or even a viable alternative.

Ask me in a couple of years and I'll be able to make a more informed statement. All I know is that I am doing better than I was, so I'm working on continual improvement, and hoping it's enough in the long run.

I understand being cautious about giving advice on how your plan looks. My plan is also different. Most people on the forum are new. I just keep that in mind when I talk with others in weight loss mode. My way may not appropriate for them.

Many people have had their plans changed for many reasons. I leave that stuff up to medical professionals.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
