Traveling 1 week after Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

So I got approved and am scheduled to be sleeved on 12/19 (excited and nervous!). I have a question about recovery--is it too much to take a 12 hour road trip one week after surgery and be gone for a week (it was planned before I got my date)? And if so, will I be okay home alone for a week that soon after surgery? My husband and kids may go without me. I'm thinking peace and quiet! Thanks for any input.

I don't know about a road trip since you may get nauseated easily with road bumps. Plus the fact that you will be on a low calorie diet and not be able to eat but only drink in small portions. Will you be able to keep up with that? It's possible but it's challenging as well. The best thing to do is consult with your surgeon.

Also I wouldn't recommend being home alone at all specially the first 4 weeks since you need some one to keep an eye on u. My friend did it and I was taking care of her, she almost fainted twice at the first 2 weeks once in the shower and once while watching tv. Never stay alone!

Best of luck

I'm almost 5 days out and I just drove for the first time today. It wasn't bad, bumps are challenging i had to hold my tummy. Not sure about 12 hours but if not driving you could take pain killers and have naps. Recline to if you can. Need to make sure you have all the liquids needed but that should be the easy part. I was out 3 hours walking around grocery shopping, looking at stuff (first time out). I was sore by the end.

Remember that you'll still be at risk for developing blood clots, so if you are driving or flying or sitting for more than an hour or two at a time, you'll need to stop for extended walking breaks every hour or so. Also, you will likely be exhausted and working very hard to get in your fluids and Protein, and basically no use to anyone other than yourself. Not saying don't go, just take a realistic look at what it probably will be like and figure out if that sounds more appealing to you than staying home or rescheduling the trip.

Another issue is that you will still be at risk for developing a leak, so when you plan your trip, research where the hospitals are nearby that have bariatric surgery units so that you know where to go for the best treatment in case that very tiny possibility becomes a reality. Better safe than sorry and all that.

You should be fine to stay home alone if that is what you decide IMO. Potentially even easier than trying to deal with family members who may still see you as a caretaker figure no matter how much you tell them that you'll be out of commission for a bit. Good luck in your decision, I can see that being a tough call!

I personally would not. Riding in Cars/sitting position for any length of time hurt me that soon after surgery. You may be craving the alone time, too!

I would wish your husband and kids a good time without you. You'll be fine alone after a week. I only needed help getting pulled up off the couch the first five days or so. But I didn't take any pain med once I left the hospital. It will be great for your recovery not to have to deal with a husband and kids. Just sit and veg out in front of the TV, have your liquids, shakes, Vitamins all there within reach. You can sleep when you want, not feel guilty about not feeding your family. Just take care of yourself. I think its a great opportunity and bet you will be healed faster along than you would should you make such a trip and have to look after the kids..

Thanks for the responses! Definitely some things to think about. I probably won't go, and will probably decide about the rest of the family based on how I feel. It seems there is a wide variety of experiences post op and maybe deciding now isn't really going to work. I will say that quiet time and doing my own thing sounds good. I may kick them out of the house often even if they don't travel far away!

I would probably play it by ear and see how you feel but keep the husband and kids going either way! A week alone after surgery sounds pretty amazing to me personally.

I'm two months post op and I wouldn't try a 12 hour road trip now. I absolutely could've been home alone, and would've loved it, at one week post op.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
