leak test after surgery. Is it standard?

@@victoria.hudson

welcome welcome welcome and welcome

many many people here on the boards speak of their leak tests

after my sleeve, doc did not do a leak test

i was concerned

(i thought i might have been the "only" one who didn't have the test)

i should have asked doc about the test after surgery

didn't think of it!

your doc will do what he thinks is right to do

don't compare to what is normal or not normal to others

good luck

kathy

Thank you, Kathy! I was just concerned when I found out he didn't, but he did explain to me that most the time a leak doesn't appear for 1-3 weeks after surgery since leaks are rarely caused by the staple line, thus a leak test right after wouldn't be accurate.

But thank you again, glad to know I'm not the only one.

I think each surgeon has their own "standard"......my surgeon did a leak test the morning after surgery. I was not allowed anything by mouth until after I had that test.......caused the driest mouth I've ever had in my life!!!! haha

I didn't have one, I was kind of surprised when I got to have ice chips a few hours after surgery.

My surgeon doesn't do a barium swallow type leak test post surgery. He does a manual leak test before the surgery is complete by putting air through the newly stapled stomach and checking for leaks.

Mine does as well. He said a proper leak test can be performed during surgery after staple line is complete .

My 4 brownies i had i think the same one you did, man was that stuff horrible. How i managed not to throw up is beyond me. It was funny because there was a tech in training poor girl she just wanted to make sure she did what the head tech asked. The head tech was being funny and asked me if i wanted to take some home in a cup, that it would be fine, i said oh sure pack it up. Well the girl started to pack up the nasty liquid and he stopped and said we were not being serious see this stuff does not taste very good at all. Here have some he gives her some and asks her to taste it and says now you will know how bad it is when your patients are throwing it back out. Poor thing turned green. Anyways that was my experience with the leak test lol.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
