This has never really caused me an issue -- even from the earliest days post-op. I am 8 weeks post-op on Wednesday, and I would say that I drink semi-normally. I occasionally get a little overzealous with my Water gulping, and I get a little pressure in my chest, but it subsides quickly, but that's about it. I have stayed away from carbonated drinks completely, and I haven't had any caffeine since before the surgery either, though. I pretty much drink all Water with an occasional caffeine-free iced tea thrown in.

I am almost 3 months out and I can drink normally with no problem. I can swallow 4-5 times with ease...I think that's gulping anyway. That was one of the same questions I had for my doctor, and they told me that no I would not have to sip forever and he was right. Just have to give it some more time. ☺

I am almost four weeks out and can drink thin liquids at a fairly normal speed. Can't swallow hard or gulp, just slow and steady.

I guess everyone is different. I am 8 months post opp. and still have to sip. I can still only take in a few ounces of food at a time. I sip all day to try to get in my liquids in. To be honest, I am okay with that. Having to sip the liquid all day keeps me from snacking.

I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and I have no problems drinking normally. I can talk multiple swallows without any problems.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
