Does anyone regret having surgery?

Recommended Posts

I went in for RNY on 11/23/16 and came out with the sleeve due to twisted intestines. So now (after researching everything for RNY after deciding to go that route) I am now catching up with sleeve research.

I don't regret the surgery. Even though my pain is coming from the upper right incision and that hasn't dulled much it's not bad enough to take pain meds all the time. I generally only take one at night before I go to sleep.

I don't crave food or want to eat anything (yet) and I watch a lot of cooking shows. What I did before surgery was had a 'last meal' at the fast food places I usually went to. McDonald's, Taco Bell, pizza and for the most part as I was eating my last meal I realized "this is crap". It didn't taste great and I was just eating it because it was easy to go through a drive through rather than cooking etc. But for the things I truly loved (like tacos) I created versions I could have without guilt when I'm back on solid food. (Using mini peppers as taco shells so I get the crunch - I have a texture issue so I hate things that are all one texture) - using 90% beef or ground turkey/chicken. It's all in the spices. For pizza I will use a cauliflower base, grilled chicken etc.

Today I started full liquids and managed to drink 11oz Protein shake (20g protein) for Breakfast with no problems. I'm about to get dressed and take a walk around the block. It's baby steps. Think ahead so you have something to look forward to.

I have lost 8 lbs in 3 days. That makes me smile.

I regret it a little bit because I am 2 weeks and a half out of surgery and I just still don't have no energy and I'm just wishing I was back to my old self

I was the same way. The day after surgery I had a lot of energy for a few days then I lost all of it for about 3 weeks or so. I was out of work for 6 weeks till I had the energy to move completely. I was sleeved 5/29/15.

I don't regret it! I am 3 weeks post op and thus far lost 20 lbs...but I had a terrible week as didn't lose a single pound!

I have read that this 'Stall' is perfectly normal but I wont lie; I am freaking!

Did anyone else stall?

@@donyaki I'd say more people than not hit a stall around 3 weeks. I did and have gone on to lose 70+ lbs...don't freak out! :)

Many go through a period of regretting the surgery and I was among them for about 1 month.

I am 3 years out, down 150 pounds, and have maintained at goal for about 2 years.

However, 5 days post-op, I had internal bleeding and almost died. My BP was down to 65/25 and an ambulance transported me to the hospital in a huge snow storm. Had a second surgery on an emergency basis. I regretted the surgery for a while and mad that I risked my life and almost died.

But when the weight started falling off and all of my health issues disappeared I embraced having the surgery.

Now 3 years later my life is so much better than before the surgery. I'd do the surgery again even if I knew about the second surgery being needed.

Follow the process and use this tool to change your life and get healthy.

I'm 3 weeks post op and I regret it everyday. I can't change it. But I just need to find my new normal.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
