Do any of you vets completely ignore this rule?

Recommended Posts

I don't think many would say that all newbies have nothing to bring to any conversation. At least I hope not. BUT, the o/p DID state she wanted VETS opinions. Her right as a poster. If one chooses to blatently disregard that, that's on them. And hearsay isn't accepted in court for a reason. If I ask for people's experiences, I don't want to hear what happened in a book or to you mother's second cousin twice removed on your brother's side. Things get lost in translation.

That said, please be kind to one another. We're all struggling and have some level of fear. Enjoy you day!

OP wanted Vets experiences and opinions.

Vets have been around for a long time and have wealth of knowledge and experiences to share.

I wouldn't dream of suggesting to someone what to do, if I have not experienced it first myself.

At 7 months post op I am not a vet, but I have experienced a lot, and keep going through the process of recovery, and I am happy to share my experiences, my ups and downs, struggles and wins. Give support from My Own experiences.

I see here on this thread, half of valuable space being taken out by multi-quotes ad nauseam, often repeated with no new comments attached.

Let's keep this thread on track. Let the Vets keep sharing their experiences.

@@Babbs **Your opinions are welcome, but don't tsk tsk and wag your finger at others who obviously have more experience than you and pretend to know what's best for THEM. Not only is it kind of ironic, it's actually pretty rude and presumptuous.**

THIS. Us newbies may have experience with certain things that are very valuable to this community, but don't expect to walk in here and hand unsolicited 'advice' to wildly successful vets and have that met with anything other than a big old 'f*$k you'.

This is no different than joining any social group...don't waltz in and act like you've been around for years. Take your time, get to know people, and in general, stay in your lane of experience. I've read a TON of information about what maintenance is going to be like, but I'm not going to give advice about it until I'm IN maintenance. Right now, I'm 4 mos out and halfway to goal. I answer questions that fall within that '4 mos out/halfway to goal' realm of experience, not things titled 'do any of you vets completely ignore this rule'. My reading and experience to date is MEANINGLESS in a discussion of what people do at a year or two or three out. And if I need advice, I'm not going to come to someone who had surgery last week! I talk to people who are right where I am, like Suzzzzz or vets like Babbs, Lipstick Lady, LisaMergs and Dub.

Why is this so hard for some people to understand?

I definitely respect what vets have to say and take their advice to heart....

I just feel that first off, I didn't notice the poster asked for vets only but even if I had, what lipstick vet said was counter to any research study, book, health professional told me and I felt the need to state my opposing opinions for the posters food for thought....

It was about diet soda...to use it not and it was compared to crystal light and there are differences. Just because ONE vet didn't get consequences from sugar free combination doesn't mean it's okay!

Idk what's so harmful in expressing my newbie opinion based in science and prior mentoring when I feel someone is being told something that might lead them down the wrong path?

I really don't get it... sure I get your pointto about experience and si on...I respect that...I use it in fact... but I just feel in this particular case, I was giving info that countered the experience of one person bc I didn't feel that her experience makes drinking diet carbonated soda okay?

Doesn't mean I'm right but I felt if I spoke up about what I knew it would provide further information to consider

Not all these accusatory words about being new, dobt talk against a vet, don't bring your baby knowledge in here against us....

You're right! Thank you for enlightening me! You're pre op and struggling with sticking to your diet (per your previous posts). You definitely have a lot to add to MY experience. :D

your support and encouragement are greatly appreciated... still doesn't mean I know nothing about diet soda, carbonation and so on...still doesn't mean I have nothing of value to add.. just bc you are able to drink sugar free soda wo effects doesn't make it good for you and going back looking for a weak post I wrote to pick on and use against be is beyond immature as well as appalling to me. Sure I can get upset and not like what someone says but not going to go look for things there struggling with to bring them down

Wow

Appalling!!? That's ALL it takes to garner that reaction?

Things that appall me-

Child molestation

Spousal abuse

Thievery

Blatant disregard towards humanity

Sending something from your iPhone is appalling?:)
umm, I was meaning in the context of behavior within a online support group not global social issues.

Thanks a lot

As a abuse survivor with PTSD, I definitely know the measure of appalling but yeh, just keep picking on me bc I said diet carbonated soda isn't known to be the best

No one asked if it was ok...the OP KNOWS that it's not generally recommended, but wanted to know if any vets drank it and if so, what their experiences were. Lipstick Lady answered VERY CLEARLY with her experience, reiterated that she wasn't recommending it for ANYONE ELSE and even said that she waited for clearance from her SURGEON. And still, you felt the need to 'educate' her and end it with something like 'but idk, it's your body'. Just don't. Okay?

There are all kinds of reasons not to drink diet soda and that goes for everyone, not just people who were sleeved.

I am sorry you were abused and have PTSD, but I only made a joke re: the automatically inserted "Sent from my iPhone..." at the end of the post. Nothing more than that.

With you there all of you have posted and who have helped me through my first year post op with your wit, wisdom and common sense.

If I were a pre-op newby I think that I might just have cottoned on to the fact (by reading the posts in the Vets forum) that they, the vets, weren't seeking advice from pre-op, recently post op or just those who were considering gastric surgery. It doesn't matter how much you have read, Googled, talked to others or gathered by mental osmosis and here say, until you have lived with the sleeve or whatever in place, you have no real idea of what really goes on. I didn't. I would no more have tried to advise the vets with my self awarded degree in WLS than fly to the moon. I would have regarded myself as an arrogant eedgit, which is probably how the vets would have seen me-and quite rightly too.

I remember being told by a teacher once that when you are lucky enough to be in the company of those who are wiser than you, then keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. I transpose this sage advice to the digital age to keep your eyes (and brain) on the text and your fingers off the keypad.

These are only my opinions and I may well be typing a crock of shite but I'll lay money on the fact that some of the vets give me a thumbs up!

I now rest my case - until something else gets my typing digits dancing!

So, you didn't read the title of the post? ;)

But yes, you are correct. Your research is much more valuable than my actual experiences. Please, by all means, continue to counter my successes with your superior knowledge.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
