So I am freaking out about my psych evaluation. I don't know why but I am! It is not until November 16 and I am already driving myself crazy about it. I don't know what to expect or if they will just tell me I need to do more evaluations. What was everyone's visit like? Or what were you freaked out about that did or didn't happen? Any input would be amazing and help ease my mind! Thanks all!

Thanks all!

I used bariatricpsychevaluations.com and my surgeon accepted it, it was real but not overbearing. My insurance even paid for it, I only had a copay of $20.00 for the service. They completed my report and sent it to my surgeon within 2 days. I checked here before I used them to see that some others had used them. If you do not have insurance the cost is $150.00. You do part of the evaluation online and then have a psychologist call you for the second half, they ask questions in regards of what you eat, how much do you eat, do you exercise have you ever experienced any trauma. The beginning of the conversation I was asked to recall my weight and the changes in my weight from a child to a young adult to now. The online portion tells them more about behavioral/thought processes. I had an appointment the next day, they have a section where you can put in your insurance to be verified and they have an appointment calendar where you can choose an appointment. I called because the appointment I wanted the next day would not let me choose it, no problem they set the appointment I wanted on their end. I was told around the time to be at home in a quiet comfortable place for the phone interview, I did and I had my psych exam. I had an appointment for October 17th at a local psychologist, I kept the appointment until I knew everything was going to be ok. Everything was ok, and I cancelled it several days before my appointment. Some here have said that their insurance did not pay for the evaluation, some have said that they had an out of pocket that was very expensive. I was willing to pay the entire $150.00 if I had to, but only had to pay $20.00 copay. Before I cancelled my local appointment I received a message that was advising me I would have had to pay $70.00 or more to the local psychologist. I came out on top with bariatricpsychevaluations.com.

Please don't be afraid. Mine was so simple. The doctor basically just wants to know that you are mentally prepared for surgery, and that you have done your research regarding it. Do not tell them you were freaking out about the appointment. I promise after its over with you are most likely going to say that was a piece of cake.

The Dr I saw just asked a few questions about why I wanted to have surgery. I explained that I wanted to be healthy for my future as I wanted to live a long healthy life. That this surgery was a tool to assist me with better healthier eating choices. My appointment didn't even last 30 minutes with him.

Best of luck to you.

No need to stress about the psych eval. The doctor I saw started out by just talking to me and asking general questions about my health and weight in the past, why I was considering surgery now, and other questions to see if I understood the process and was knowledgeable about the surgery. Then I had to do 3 questionnaires. They were just to make sure that there are no underlying psych issues that were causing me to be overweight such as food dependency and other issues like alcoholism that may become worse after surgery. I was told that it wouldn't keep me from having surgery but would let them know if I needed his assistance after surgery to work through issues that could potentially be problems. Best wishes and good luck!

I don't hear that well and thought the Pych was the NUT. I talked about dieting for a half in hour until I figured out she was the Pysch.

I think they just want to see that your dedicated to the journey and well adjusted despite the obesity.

In my case, I was well aware that my weight was a health risk, but never really thought that I was abnormal in any (other) way.

Remember, they're #1 goal is your success. Once you enter the program, your success reflects on the quality of their program.

I think they'd only reject you if they feel your likely to fail (drink sugary drinks and graze on slider foods all day).

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
