Journey to WLS may be over for me

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am coming to terms that the journey to WLS is over. I have done the low carb, high Protein, no sugar, no bread plan, 3 hrs a week of exercise, and it has put me under the BMI of 40. My first weigh in was at 240, 5'4, now I weigh 222. I don't have any co-morbidities. The nurse said that I need to gain weight so I can still qualify.

Well, I don't want to gain weight. I enjoy not having the aches and pains any more. I'm going to continue my NUT visits since I'm 3 months in. My husband and close friend told me to keep up this lifestyle and I may not need the surgery. I can understand their point, I just don't want to look up and gain everything back and then some. I guess what I'm saying is, I miss the bad foods. And, I want to eat it, but, I'm a person who can't cheat, or it will get out of control. So, for the past month, I've been really strict with what I eat.

What are your thoughts?

BTW, my BCBS insurance says my 6 month nutritional visits are good for 4 years, but things can change at any time.

I am sorry you are in this position! Maybe give it a year or six months and see what you can do on your own. You can always go back to WLS if you want it. I don't know your weight loss history though if you feel like you are a yo yo dieter like many of us, you already know that you need more help. So maybe look at your own history and see if you can truly commit to it. Either way you gotta watch what you put in your mouth forever. I feel like with WLS though you kinda get a do over on your body. Because of the rapid weight loss in the beginning. So for me I'm looking at this as a second chance to take care of a skinny body, knowing all the things I now know as an adult. I'm not gonna wreck my "new" body. Good luck!

I would definitely check in with your insurance coordinator and your insurance carrier. Most insurance companies will judge your eligibility based on your *first* weigh in, not your last. There are some exceptions, but I wouldn't assume that a nurse knows for sure what the answer is. So do some real digging on that. If your insurance company is like most (not all) you would still have the option to consider as you progress with your weight loss. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! Your feedback has been a big help. I'm a past yo-yo dieter and it's been rough trying to get back under 200lbs. That's my long term goal.

I'm going to keep pushing through this so, I'll have them submit my information when everything is done. But the surgeon office charges $250 to submit it through the insurance company. I wonder if I can submit it without paying the $250 bucks. I shouldn't be so cheap, but, why does it cost anything to submit to the insurance company. Oh well..I'll have to use my HSA money.

I've heard people putting weights in their pockets. I know that's fraud but so many do it.

I actually myself put on 10 extra pounds to meet the qualifications. I quickly took them off. You can probably gain it quickly with little effort

Gaining weight is not an option since I want a lifestyle change. Definitely not going to commit fraud

Self pay in Mexico is always an option! My lapband was covered by insurance due to comorbities but when my band had complications 6 yrs later I did not have insurance. Sleeve revision in Mexico saved me!

You don't have to have WLS. You could choose not to have it. Or, you could choose not to have it now.

If you do postpone, just keep in mind that you may have to redo much of the pre-op testing, etc. if you wait a while.

It is up to you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
