Surgeon consult on Friday!

Recommended Posts

I have my surgeon consult on Friday and am both excited and nervous. I have been working with a weigh management clinic for almost a full year now and am ready to move on to the surgical option and change my whole life. I'm ready to get started, but nervous mainly for my family and the actual surgical process and healing. I have question for you all:

How long did you all stay in the hospital when you had yours done? My babies are 4, 3, an 2 and it's just my husband at home. No family nearby. It's still a huge weight on my shoulders about how they will manage.

When did you return to work? I am a professor, so while I'm on my feet off and on, I don't feel it is overly strenuous work.

Did you tell coworkers? I'm not ashamed of the surgery, but I'm curious if you shared this information.

Thank you all!

I also work in higher ed. I told my supervisor, but I know with faculty you don't really have a "supervisor." I wanted my supervisor to know why I was taking so much sick leave for pre-authorization appointments. My insurance carrier requires 6 months of nutrition counseling, pulmonology, cardiology, and psychiatric consults. So it's a lot of time off work over the a 6-month period. I'll probably tell some people at my job after the surgery, but not a lot.

Best of luck with everything!

Strangely enough, I have my surgeon consult on Friday and I also work in Higher Education. Small world.

Since I have a tendency to be overly private, even with friends, I made a decision to be as transparent as possible in an effort to counteract the bad habits that got me in this situation in the first place. So I've been pretty open about my plans for surgery with my staff ( I supervise about 3 other people) and with my supervisor. Since I've needed to take a lot of time off for other preparatory appointments and I need to prep my staff for my possible absence, I felt it was the right thing to do.

I also work with people who I felt (and so far I've been correct) supportive of my prioritizing my health. There have been other institutions I've worked at that I would not be this forthcoming because the support would not be there and I'd be afraid that I would be discriminated against.

My program and the other patients in the support group have said the hospital stay is 1-2 days assuming there are no complications. I'm in an HMO so I think they want you out ASAP to save the cost. After that they say I'll be home from 2 wks to a month. Probably closer to 2 weeks since I'm white collar.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I have been hearing a day. Someone said they were in less than a day. I guess it kinda depends. I'm trying to schedule the surgery so that I can take the least amount of time away from actual classes. early December and/or March for Spring Break seems more ideal than weeks prior. But I digress. If I would have planned for things better, I would have done it before classes even started, but it is what it is. Thanks again and good luck!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
