Need Encouragement!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of being sleeved and though I don't have an offical surgery date, mid to late December is what I'm being told.

Tonight I had my first Life Skills class, which is how to live/eat after surgery. I have to say, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and panicky. Though I still want the surgery and a healthy lifestyle, all the "don'ts" are freaking me out! Not to mention, having surgery around Christmas with 2 young children.

I guess I just need to be" talked off the ledge" so to speak.

Help!

Don't get caught up with all the "rules" as you learn by trial and error. I'm 30 days post surgery lost 37 pounds and feel great. It might be a little tough to have the surgery right before xmas...it depends on how you adjust to the surgery..everyone is different. You can expect being tired all the time. Pain for the first few weeks and multiple eating plans that you move through..the first few weeks is mostly liquids...

Choose not to focus on what you're giving up, and instead focus on what you're gaining. The "sacrifices" that seem so big and daunting now, will seem very small in comparison once you start living your new life. By providing your body with good, clean food/fuel and allowing it to move with exercise, you'll see how it thanks you by how much better you feel and how the lbs are shed. Yes, holidays will be tough, but so many successful people on here will tell you one key is to make those times that previously focused so much on the food, to ones which focus on being with people you love and just soaking up "the moment."

And if it gets rough, focus on how you'll feel and how different your life will be with next year's holidays!

I had surgery on 1/5/16. I'm down to 135 now and feel Awesome. To be honest, the first 5 days are the roughest. I'd time your surgery so that Christmas is not in the 1st 5 days post op. Either go earlier or ask to go after the 25th.

You can do this. Really, you can! There is a lot of learning how to eat again, but your sleeve will be your guide. It will tell you what feels right, so listen! You will be shocked that carbs suddenly taste bad and you really don't miss them. Protein is your friend...and your sleeve will let you know that too!

Your sleeve will be a tool that changes your life. You got this!

I was like you, and needed to be talked off the cliff, but im 1 week post op and ive achieved every obstacle that i came across over this 6 month process. The day after surgery for me wasnt bad and i was up and running 2 hrs after and i havent set down since. Ive had 3 csections so having to get up after that type of surgery wasnt uncommon for me.Getting my Protein in this week has been little to none. Ive been really tired and nausea but i just found this bone broth Protein powder to add in everything so maybe that will help me. I got the tasteless flavor so i can add it in food and everything so once im cleared fkr food, i hope to be able to get it done. Good luck

If I were you, unless it changes to early to mid December, I would hold off until January. You want to enjoy the holidays with your babies and follow through with traditions. I had a pretty standard recovery other than a brief stay in the hospital week 2. You never know what could happen as far as complications and you don't want to spend Christmas in the hospital. Many people are readmitted into the hospital due to dehydration 1-2 weeks out. I personally wouldn't take that risk so close to Christmas

You can do it! It is completely normal to be nervous ... but push through it! You will do wonderfully!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
