Hoping someone can tell me about chia seeds

Recommended Posts

Are they good for you? I'm almost 5 months out from gastric.

Any good recipes for them?

Thanks!

Every day I either have some chia seeds or flaxseed in my Protein shakes/smoothies. They have a ton of antioxidants, Fiber, Protein, rich in Omega-3, and also have zinc, Calcium, magnesium. Net carb is 1g per ounce. So tiny but literally packed with nutrition. That is why they are classified a super food. They are so versatile with very little taste so you can add them to just about anything. Enjoy :)

Just be careful and make sure you are cleared to have seeds. They absorb Water and bulk up. I love them in my shakes, but I stopped using them for my pre-op liquid diet and I know I'll have to wait for awhile after.

I love chia seeds. I can't quite describe the taste...maybe a mild nutty taste? Not sure. I imagine that I will have to wait to eat them again for some time after surgery (VSG for me) as they are very tiny and will absorb liquid. I don't even want to imagine getting those stuck in a healing stomach. I hope to add them to shakes when I start my liquid diet in December.

Yeah, they do have a bit of a slight nutty taste. I started adding them to my pre-op shakes and then a friend of a friend said she couldn't have seeds on her pre-op, so I asked my coordinator and it was discouraged. I'm going to miss them for awhile.

I mainly use chia to add Fiber to my diet. I find that shakes are more filling when I add them.

Nutritional info: https://authoritynutrition.com/foods/chia-seeds/

I grind them in a coffee grinder and add a tablespoon of them to a shake. Soaking them makes them slimy so I just make sure I get 16 oz of liquid. I refrigerate them after grinding.

My husband likes the "gel" (1tablespoon chia seeds 9 tablespoons of warm Water makes one serving) he splits it into two. It needs to be refrigerated.

China seeds are fairly high in potassium, ~400mg per serving and they will act as a diuretic of you over do it.

I got a chia zombie (80% off!) to send to my son who didn't come home for Chanukah because he had better things to do with his winter break.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
