How long did your Dr put you out for?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 9/27 and still having trouble getting in fluids. Dr said should be able to go back to work in 2 weeks which will be 1 week from today. Hoping I feel up to it. I am so busy at work, going to be hard to remember to drink fluids. How long did your Dr give you?

I struggled a ton in the first seven days but then started to feel significantly better. I went back to work 12 days post-op and it was ok. I work in retail so I do NOT have a desk job for the most part, but I just went slow and steady. I didn't see any sight of feeling better after five days post-op, but after the one week mark it really did get better-hang in there!

@@KristenLe, yes I can take up to 4 weeks as long as Dr puts me out. @@aligator517, hopefully in another few days I will feel better. My sister just went for a walk with me outside and I could only walk a block. Now feel very weak and tired. Chewing on ice hoping that will help with getting in fluids. Thanks everyone

Minimum 2 weeks. Maximum 6 weeks. I had 7 business days off, then 4 half days. I should have taken more, work is kicking my @$$ and I have a desk job. The only good thing is it forces me awake and drinking at 7am.

I was sleeved a week ago today and went back to work today. I have a desk job, but it was hard. I really was not very productive at all. Hoping tomorrow is better.

I really hope I will be able to return at 9 days post-op. I would say my job is mild to moderately active. I'll have to walk down the hall to pick up my preschool students for speech therapy, sit down for about a half-hour, then go and switch my kids and do another half-hour. I have about 8 kids a day. I'm expecting to a bit sore and tired the first few weeks, but some people have healed very quickly. Based on my past experience having gallbladder surgery (9+ years ago), I tend to recover pretty quickly. Praying for a similar, easy experience.

I'm glad I read your post. I am 5 days post op and suppose to go back to work on Monday. Right now, I don't see how. I'm not getting all my fluids in, I'm trying without feeling absolutely miserable. I've been managing my pain well but I'm really sore. He hurts to sit and then get up. Some positions are downright uncomfortable.

My surgery was last Monday, and I'm going back to work tomorrow. So six total days off work.

I work in an office, so it's not that bad for me. I'm getting my fluids in, not experiencing any pain, and I really prefer to get back into my work routine.

@@Butterfly007 hang in there-all of it was tough for me that first week but has gotten progressively easier. I hit four weeks tomorrow and while that first week is vivid in my memory, I like to look back and see my progress and how much better I feel now!

@@Butterfly007 I was SO bloated! My abdomen was extremely distended for about two weeks. I let it be and stuck with what I needed to do-focused on liquids and Protein goals. I did find that I needed to walk around the block after meal time which helped a bit. Also important to take the daily acid treatment. There is so much swelling inside that we don't see that takes time to go down. It did eventually. Just needed to be patient.

Well I was approved for 4 weeks. So happy. Told at follow-up can start puréed on Friday. But need to get more fluids in. Took off steri strips one area weeping but not infected. Have to go get X-ray of chest due to horrible cough even though my lungs sound clear. I believe by the 24th I should be good to go back to work.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
