Eating at 5 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Hi, All

So I'm 5 weeks post op and am struggling to get 1/4 C. of food in at meal time. I'm supposed to be at about 1/2 C. but feel full just shy of 1/4 c. Now I find that I am hungry a little over every 2 hours. This then leads to having difficulty getting all my Protein,60g , in everyday. I'm considering having 2 Protein shakes a day in addition to food. Thoughts or any experience with this

There is nothing wrong with supplementing with Protein shakes to get your goals met.

I'm about to mix one for my Breakfast this morning and drink it on the way to work, in fact. This is a fairly routine practice for me.

Don't try to force yourself to eat more than you are comfortable with. Usually the serving sizes listed in documentation from a bariatric program is a maximum, not a minimum. And stomachs do not come in "one size fits all" configurations, either pre-op or post-op. Your goal should be to *never* eat so much that you feel uncomfortable.

And Dub is absolutely right, there is nothing wrong with supplementing with Protein Shakes to get all your Protein in, or swapping out a Protein Shake for a meal, as long as you are staying within a reasonable calorie limit for the day.

How are you feeling otherwise? I am considering and love to hear everyone tell their tales. I would hope to go back to work by week 2 ...hard to take time off.

I'm doing great! Healing went well ,no complications. I took 3 weeks off and I was glad I did!

I am 3 mths out and can only eat 1/4 to a 1/3 cup of food. I hear my surgeons voice at times saying "do not clean your plate." :-)

Still having a Protein shake every morning and sometimes in the afternoon depending on my day. You are doing great!

solid food or pureed, or both? I'm only 3 weeks out, and I can eat 1/4 pureed easy (unfortunately hehe). I have heard there is a huge difference between pureed and solid feelings of full. Thanks.

I had my surgery on the 5th of September, I'm about half way through week three and I just now feel somewhat ok to work. But u was naughty I took a plane home 3 days ago and had bad abdominal pain from sitting so long took about 2 days to subside... All good now though. Also I'm a manicurist, only thing worrying me is the sitting for so long

Thanks everyone! I am currently drinking 1 premier Protein shake (30 g) and today I added 1/2 of another brand Protein Shake in addition to eating pretty much every 2 hours. My body seemed to liek this better and I reached over 70g of Protein today!!

Just be very careful with the Premier Protein shakes. They do give you a slug of Protein (30g)and are tasty. However, I've never been so constipated in my life as the time of pre-surgery liquid fast and the first month after, due to those shakes. I learned to add 3 scoops of Benefiber Clear to my shakes, along with crushed ice and shake them well, and they went down nicely. Note: You might not be able to drink all 16 oz without feeling queasy. We were told to try half at a time, if that's the case.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
