Next step... sleep study. And totally scared.

Recommended Posts

Going Monday night to do my sleep study. Very anxious about it. I'm afraid I won't sleep since they only want you to sleep on your back. I'm a side sleeper. I've tried every night for the last week to do it and just can't. I don't know what to do. Will they give me meds to help me sleep? I'm scared.

Hey Terri! The sleep study is not hard at all. Stressing over it is way worse. They will hook you up to all kinds of wires, there is no pain or anything.. tuck you into a nice bed (like a hotel room) and you will sleep. I am a side sleeper also and I was able to move somewhat. Please don't be scared. It's really easy. I got to read a bit and watch TV... the worst part is they get you up at the butt crack of dawn!

Feel free to reach out if you want to chat.

Janice

I actually was able to do my sleep study at home. I had to go to the center at around 8pm & they gave me the monitor and showed me how to hook myself up to it & I took it home (I just had to have all the equipment back by the following night).

Originally I was meant to stay overnight but they decided to send me home to do it. It was pretty straightforward but I didn't sleep much!

I was so adamant about not being able to sleep with people watching that they okayed an at home study. I picked up the gear, and returned it the next day.

My sleep study was done in a hospital. The room was like a hotel room. I was allowed to take ambien and go to sleep pretty much my regular routine. You're hooked up to some wires from head to toe, I had a very nice sleep study attendant, who explained everything beforehand. It didn't hurt that he was handsome as well as knowledgeable! Lol. Found out I had severe obstructive sleep apnea from that study. My oxygen levels were dropping dangerously low at night and had awakenings 188 times in six hours. I wasn't able to tolerate the cpap due to asthma. This is the reason I had the sleeve done two weeks ago. I already feel better twenty lbs down!

Sleep study was a lifesaver and very easy..don't sweat it!!

I was told to take 10mg of Melatonin right before mine was done. They don't care how you fall asleep but are concerned with the results from when you are actually sleeping. Mine was so easy and done in a very nice room and I was tired and fell asleep quickly. I ended up being put on a Bi-pap and sleep with it every night and after my surgery I am hoping I will not need it again.

Don't sweat it, it should be very simple. Best of luck to you.

Hello All,

I am a bariatric patient and I work for Pulmonary answer sleep docs. I can reassure you that you will be fine. Back sleeping or side sleeping doesn't really matter. If you stop breathing or have a low O2 concentration while you sleep is pretty much what they're looking for. You can do home studies but they are less accurate because it is up to the patient to record the data correctly. There is a variable for error. Anyway, if you have any questions I'd be happy to try to answer them for you.

And Rosey posey, I work for MC Pulmonary and Sleep out East. Who is doing your surgery?

@@DebiW, please don't take yourself off of BiPAP without having another sleep study. Weight is not the number one cause of apnea. I've been in the sleep field for 10 years & some of the worse apnea I've seen was little, old, 90 lb women who stop breathing for 2 minutes at a time.

I am so happy I did a sleep study and you will, too. The process was kind of strange, sleeping in a room while someone watches and you have all these electrodes on your body. I love my CPAP and feel I'm sleeping more soundly, plus I don't snore anymore! You will be so glad you did this...no need to worry about it...

So it went well. I slept and woke up every hour and a half or so. Now the wait for the results. UGH

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
