Loose Skin Worry

Recommended Posts

I am in the very initial stage of sleeve surgery. Met with the team (Dr., NUT, Exercise Physiologist, Labs & EKG done). My question is ... Can I do anything in this PRE-Surgery mode to assist with future loose skin? I am 50+ and have a lot to lose (100+) and fear that I will end up looking horrible with loose skin everywhere. Any advice?

I don't know if it will help at all, I'm also in the beginning stages. I've decided to do light weights until surgery. I feel it will help out with the rapid weight loss and put me ahead of the game.

Here are some things you can do that *might* help lessen loose skin. It really just depends on a lot of factors, most of which are out of your control. But here is what you can do:

  • moisturize daily
  • stay well hydrated
  • take your Vitamins (vitamins C & E, as well as beef Gelatin can improve skin elasticity)
  • strength training (you can "fill in" loose skin with muscle where you lose fat in some areas)

Just remember, you should not let the prospect of loose skin discourage you from WLS or losing weight. A little loose skin never killed anyone, but excess weight has killed millions of people.

Yes start light strength training now. You can get a lot done in 6 months. You're at a good starting weight so don't be afraid like I was to lose more before surgery the closer you can get to goal the easier your journey will be. Good luck.

I think a lot of it depends on where we carry our excess weight. Working with weights can help, especially with arms and legs, because the muscle gets bigger and fills in some of the space where the skin is sagging.

Go to Youtube and watch vidoes about weight loss and excess skin. People will show their before and after pix and strip down and show it all. They are BRAVE! They call them "skin flicks". Ha.

I am not worried about it at all. I am almost 54. I figure my bikini days are way past me. Tummy trouble is easy to hide with shape wear. My legs have never looked good, even before I gained the weight I have always had big legs, I am not expecting them to magically be awesome!

Sleeveless tops may always be out of the question for me, but I have heard a lot of people are cold all the time after WLS so that might not be comfortable anyway.

Good plan to start working on it now though, I need to do that too :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
