Hi Cape Crooner - great post. One question - when you say drop out of any or all social events - do you mean forever or just in the losing phase? I'm a very social person, especially love hanging out with my girlfriends, so not sure what to think of that advice! As for who to tell - if I can pull it off, only my husband will know I've had WLS.

@@TracyBar - I only mean for the pre-opt diet (which in my case was 2 months) and then the majority of the weight lost phase. If it doesn't bother you to be around others in a social setting overeating, drinking beer, and raving about all their homemade Desserts, GOD BLESS YOU - go! Not me, I was much happier staying home, watching football or a movie and following my diet plan in peace.

A lot of women in my support group mentioned that they came from families with lots of obese women who took strong offense if someone didn't eat all their Pasta salads, mac & cheese, lasagna, cake, Cookies, etc, etc at a family event (and there were usually 2-3 family events a week).

Well that makes sense then - I'm not sure I'd be very successful either if I had to be around too much food when I'm trying to lose weight. I've really paid attention to how many food commercials there are on tv these days. Think I'll be watching Netlix and reading instead of watching t.v.!

No, I wouldnt. Yes, I'm losing weight like crazy, yes, I feel healthier, and am healthier, but no, I would not do it again. I would work my ass off and just stick to the pre-op diet to lose weight. I just have a weird feeling every single day that I wake up. I dread eating because of the pain, yet long to taste flavor. I'm only 26, so I feel like I should have buckled down one last time and tried to lose on my own again. I'm only 1 month post op, so this feeling could go away soon, but for now I wish I had never gotten the surgery. Nothing tastes good to me, and my biggest concern is that I can't chug Water anymore without severe pain. I also get nauseous every single time I have to take a Vitamin. I'm sure one day I'll come to appreciate the pouch, but for now it's my worst enemy.

It takes time. Just take it slowly. It will get better. Trust me. 12 weeks out and I ve re-started to drink water...food is still a problem some days, especially Protein. But I am happy I am no longer turning to food for comfort and I have managed to stay away from sweets for the past 16 weeks. Felt sick once because I ate too fast but apart from that it's all been fine. Remember ur pouch won't hurt you as long you don't hurt it first. Good luck.

Keep your head up! I wish I would have gotten it at your age. I just did mine and I am having the same issues as you are but on the liquids. Used to love Water now I hate it. Have to have flavoring in it just to drink it but I hate the flavoring also lol. I cant stand the taste of anything just about. I thought I was picky before, holy crap I think I am going to be pickier lol. Taking the Vitamins are hard for me, I got some Fair Life milk (has 13 gr of Protein and is better for you than reg milk) and it helps the pills go down easier. My nut told me about that. I cant drink too much of it cause anything with a little bit of thickness makes me queasy. I hope food don't do that to me but I am sure it will. Everything smells good but the thought of eating it makes me leary lol. Good luck! I am sure this all will get better!

@@CNOEL3 Being able to chug Water will come back. It took me maybe 2-3 months to get to that point. One thing you may want to try is different temperatures of water. I have found that ICE COLD water (with ice literally floating in it) is MUCH easier for me to drink than room temp water or even just a chilled bottled water. I bought an insulated water bottle that keeps my ice in ice form all day long at work and that has helped tremendously.

@@CNOEL3 You need to also remember that although you may have been able to lose weight on your own - there's only a 5% chance of being able to keep that weight off. I told myself for many years I could do it on my own - and unfortunately waited until I got up to 300lbs with several comorbidities (and 48 years old) before I realized I couldn't. You are early out - give yourself time to heal.

This is certainly true. I always considered my sleeve to be "weight maintenance surgery" instead of "weight loss surgery". I have lost hundreds of pounds "on my own" over the years. At one point I even lost 90 pounds in about a year. Several more times I lost 40-50 pounds. And I can't even count the number of times I lost 20-25 pounds. I always said that if losing weight was an Olympic event, I'd be a multi-time gold medal winner. But what I truly truly sucked at was keeping it off! When I began considering VSG, I was back to within 10 pounds of my highest weight, staring down the barrel of another year-long diet to get back to a reasonable weight, and knowing that in two years, I'd gain all the weight right back. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It was time to change the game!

So far it seems to have worked! Since reaching goal just about a year post-op, I've now been maintaining for a full year with no sign of impending regain!

I heard that after a while, you WILL be able to chug Water again. I haven't had surgery yet, but I have heard tgat the pain goes away and that things do get better. I am 44, and I feel like if I wait any longer, it will be too late for me. I'm ready to start living my life. I haven't "lived" yet. My weight has taken everything away from me and I want it back! I want my confidance and energy back. I want to run and play with my nieces, I want to play softball again. I want to find someone to spend the rest of my life with, and right now, at this weight (270) I don't see ANY of that happening. I hope things get better for you.

@@CNOEL3 - hang in there. I haven't had the surgery yet - doing my research. But keep popping on to get support and let us know how you're doing after each week goes by. You could be experiencing a hormone dump maybe as well?

Thanks so much for all the support. I do hope it gets better, and it could be the hormone dump since my stupid period has been crazy since surgery too. I dont mean to discourage anyone from getting surgery, just giving my honesty.

That's ok - you should feel you can speak how you need to in here. I've read similar posts like yours from people in the early days/weeks after surgery. Of course it gives me pause, but I think overall there are so many people in here that have had great success and are much happier now than before. Keep us posted!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
