Awkward hmmmm...probably constant Protein farts :-P ....nothing has been really akward...but people who don't know me ask well why didn't you just work out with a trainer first ? No crap like I didn't try that and everything else under the sun. Makes me wanna punch someone . Cause weightloss surgery is totally an easy way out says NO ONE who is going through it .

A few awkward moments: My OB/GYN didn't recognize me until he started reading my chart. He thought I was a new patient. That awkward moment when you are eating out with people who didn't know you had surgery...they just go on and on about how little you eat. Or when you are out to eat, you and your husband share a meal (he had surgery too) and you eat so little the manager comes out to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with your food. We then spend 5 minutes explaining that we had surgery and cannot eat. Then spend another 10 minutes answering questions about our surgeon, the process, etc. Now what I mostly get is "are you done losing weight? You are so skinny." or "Are you sure you didn't have plastic surgery, I don't see any skin?"

My daughter met a young man that was working as a clerk at a gas station. He was talking to her and my daughter could tell that he liked her and was going to ask her out. Another girl was working at the gas station too. She knew my daughter from elementary and middle school. She said to the boy in front of my daughter that she used to be fat. He just looked at the girl and said well she's not now. The manager heard the conversation and he fired the girl on the spot. My daughter was so embarrassed. She never did go out with the boy.

My One Year Surgery-versary, I was talking to a co-worker saying how it'd been a year and she said "Yeah, I remember when you first started, I said to myself 'Man, she sure is FAT'". I was so surprised by her comment, all I could do was nod.

Seeing people who knew the 'old me' who don't recognize the 'new me' and I have to basically re-introduce myself.

People who know about my surgery - and I've been very open about it - who have no problems asking how much I've lost now and what my goal is...so with some simple math they can figure out what my starting weight was. I'm proud of my weight loss but not as comfortable with the world knowing my starting point...

I went to give my father in law some shirts that don't fit me anymore and he said "are you sure you want to give these away? You'll probably just gain the weight back"

AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

How could those words POSSIBLY come out of the mouth of someone who loves you???!!!!

Did you reply?

I haven't had my WLS yet (I get sleeved on Thursday). But I'm already feeling somewhat awkward for what is in store. It's going to be awkward when I meet new people as someone who is thin, and eventually tell them that I once used to be over 200 pounds (my max weight was 255). I'm dreading that moment. But, I'm more excited about losing the weight and getting my life back than anything. :)

Great thread! I agree with most of these.

It is awkward when you go out to eat and the server approaches looking very concerned and asks if there is anything wrong with the food because you've not eaten much.

I have a coworker who keeps giving me diet recommendations. I "should be" eating this and I "shouldn't be" eating that. She knows that I have had surgery, and I keep reminding her that I'm on a "special diet" with a reduced stomach, so the "recommended" way of eating (half a plate of veggies and a very small portion of protein) isn't going to work because my focus is Protein first - whether it be via Protein shakes or lean meat (she's also vegetarian). She doesn't agree with Protein Shakes and meat as Protein sources, because she says "I should be getting them naturally via veggies/beans." I am tired of explaining this to her, LOL.

My other pet peeve - my family keeps telling me that I'm getting too small and that I don't need to lose any more weight. Even though I'm tall - I'm still a size 12. Far from skinny IMO.

When I tell people my goal weight or how much more I want to lose they act shocked and tell me that it's too much to lose. It's so annoying. If it's too much, either it won't happen or I'll gain some back if I look sickly.

Sometimes when I see someone I haven't seen in a while, they ask"did you get a haircut or something?" OR they'll say "nice haircut!". There is no new haircut lol. They just can't figure out what's different I think

You don't have to tell anyone you were overweight. I've been at goal for more than two years and those who met me at my current weight, do not know I was heavy. I don't hide it but I don't announce it either. The only people who I have to tell about my weight are the men I have relationships with. And that's my choice...I don't have to do that either. I've had two relationships that went past a date or two and both those men knew I had WLS. I'm in a commited relationship now and he knows as well. I didn't disclose it right away but I saw where we were going and wanted to get it out of the way. Oh, and FYI, the reactions were always positive not negative. Good luck and like I said...it's up to you what to tell, and to whom.

Aw man, he might not have known what to say!

I am struggling with the skin..... my bat wings as I call my arms... I have a lot of skin in my thighs butt area... it bothers me but it bothers me less then being overweight... I am single and it might take some time for me to be comfy with sharing myself with anyone.... but I feel so much better... still fighting with the lack of energy.... and still working on accepting that part of me... but I feel normal again.... people dont stare at me I am no longer the fattest person in any given area... and guys even hold doors open for me... I wish I had done it sooner

I know people who have batwings that haven't been super overweight!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
