Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Veterans ONLY please. One year + post op.

Recommended Posts

Like it was stated before, we already have a veterans forum.

Are you asking Alex to put a stop to anyone posting in this forum who isn't 18 months post op? Or are you asking to start a new vets forum?

I don't want a new one started. I think there are too many already. ( forums)

If there is a way to stop anyone from posting in the current vets forum unless they are 18 months post op, then I am all for that.

I agree that there are too many forums. The idea is to restrict who can post here. :)

I want a forum exclusively for albino, dwarf, lesbian, Eskimo women who are vegetarians, are cross-eyed and have a lisp.

But alas, I will be excluded from that group, I don't have a lisp. :)

I'm pretty sure we have that already....

I don't post a lot but I am on the boards most days. I would be open to either a new Vets forum or limiting and enforcing the posting requirements. I usually only go to the Vets forum anyway being 3 years post-op.

The results are in and decisions have been made.

In accordance with OVERWHELMINGLY popular opinion ...

NO NEW VET FORUM WILL BE CREATED!!!!!!!!

But.

That congenial, enthusiastic, inspiring, not too hard on the eyes, boy toy ... the one and only @@Alex Brecher has agreed that we DO need to enforce the posting requirements.

So....

This current vet forum will be changed to read only for those who are not 18 months post op. At that point, they can join in any and all conversations!

I will let you know when the changes are in place. :D

Thanks to ALL who answered.

I am almost 14 months post and I agree with VETS only forum being limited for who can post. I joined BP about 7 months before I had surgery and read a lot. I read now and *like* on the posts and respond sometimes. I try to answer the no reply threads and welcome the newbies but at times it gets 'dicey' to answer some of the posts because you get called a bully, or part of a clique, etc.....so I read and move on.

I see people giving out post-op suggestions who haven't even had surgery. The OP have a large number of posts so if you just glance at that, you think they are post-op, and then you look at the surgery date and its still a few months away...

I'm late to the party but I agree.... Restricted posting but all can read. 18 months is great.

Now I just have to bookmark it because otherwise it's really hard to find subforums on the iPhone app!

Great idea @LipstickLady! Sorry to be late to the party as well--I'll look for the new forum. Presently about the only ones I read (2+ years out and still working on losing) are Veterans and Rants/Raves.

I like the 18 months, and the read only until then idea. Nice.

I would like to be included in the play group. I'm headed for 10 years and I also get weary of " can I have pizza after 3 weeks?" Also" I haven't lost any weight in 3 days".

Just a different mindset and goal.

I like the idea, but now that most people use this site from their mobile apps - it doesn't work that well. Example, i post something in the vets forum aimed at people who are a long ways out from surgery. We banter - you know the stuff that people talk about. Then, because it shows up under "new posts" someone clicks on it, doesnt even realize they are in the vets forum (or rants, or singles etc) and takes offense. This happened to me - quite awhile ago I made a post in the singles forum that offended someone deeply; among other things, she felt that my comments were not in any way helping WLS support. I wasn't posting about WLS, but of course that person didn't realize it was a specialized forum.

I am actually kind of done with it all.

They will figure it out really quick when they actually CAN NOT reply. As in, there is NO OPTION. I think this should be the case for the male only and female only rooms, too.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
