I caught a bus in on my own, spent three days in hospital alone then caught a cab home. I didn't want my husband dragging the kids in. I was fine. The nurses were amazing. I was feeling very poorly for the first 48hrs so I was glad I didn't have to talk to anyone!

I would also ask an in law to go with you even if they take a break while you are actually in surgery and you send them home after you wake up. Believe it or not, it is VERY nice to have a familiar face when you wake up kind of out of it. I am single as well but had my sister come with me and I'm glad that I did. Just tell them in advance that you probably won't need them to be with you the whole time so that they won't be offended when you send them home. Just say that you need to get some rest and that they can come visit tomorrow. My sister left on day 2. She brought me back home from the hospital. I took a quick shower and then she caught a flight an hour later. So I recovered "home alone" for the next two weeks. Just because we can do things on our own alone doesn't mean that we have to[emoji3]

@@Sandy GlueStick,

You’ll be fine, as long as your hospital lets you check in alone. I can’t imagine that they’ll let you check in without having a plan for being driven home, though, unless they’re planning to keep you in for a good long while until the anesthesia and any other meds wear off.

Your best bet is to check with the hospital for their policy.

In terms of how the experience will be, stay positive! Yes, it is often nicer to go with someone, but you are strong. You can do this! I bet the nurses and everyone else at the hospital will take extra good care of you and make an extra effort to help make your experience as good as possible.

i've had past outpatient surgeries that required anesthesia and have gotten a car service to take me in. but always arranged to have family/friend pick me up (that is typically required). I too do not like to inconvenience someone just to take me somewhere early in the morning, when there is nothing they can do for me especially when I know they'll have to stay to help me when I return home.

i do however want my daughter to come by the hospital after my surgery to help me get up and walk as I hear that is so important after surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
