Hello, did anyone here have to check-in alone? Drive to surgery, check themselves in, wake up, everything else, alone, without someone with them?

My husband won't be in town in time and I absolutely don't want to ask any of his family to take me. They would in a heart beat for sure if I asked but I'm the kind of person who hates to inconvenience others. I kind of think I'd be okay being alone?

I just wondered if anyone here was alone for surgery experience, or thoughts on not asking anyone to accompany me.

You might be able to check-in, etc. by yourself, but I can pretty much guarantee you'll need someone to pick you up from the hospital. Aside from that, you should be okay.

My husband stayed with me until just before I went back to surgery. He left afterward and didn't come back until later that night. He had to work and I told him since he is not a doctor he wouldn't be able to do anything if anything went wrong. They took his number down and they called him and told him how everything went. It gave me time to relax and recover afterward without distraction. The hospital was cool with it.

Check with your hospital and their regulations. The only thing you may have trouble with is driving home from the hospital. Sadly not everyone who needs surgery has family or friends to help them. There has to be something planned for those situations.

Agreed. I haven't had WLS yet but I've had other surgeries and medical procedures done, and being single in cities where I have no family and few friends means I've had to deal with everything by myself. Of course, you should talk to the hospital about their regulations, but I imagine if you take a taxi (or public transportation) home you'll be fine. Often the big issue is not the fact that you are alone, but that you will be behind the wheel post-surgery.

I had a procedure where they wouldn't let me take an Uber home by myself. There physically had to be someone there.

Almost no hospital in the US is going to let you leave alone, or in a cab. You need someone to pick you up.

It is really stupid and discriminatory against single people, but that is a rant for a different day.

You may also check with the hospital. Many can have transportation available if you would with their social workers. I had a situation during my upper endoscopy and had issues with a ride and the social worker was going to arrange transport but I was ultimately able to find a ride.

I had the same experience with my endoscopy. Not sure if it is NY state law or just that clinic's rules. They offered a service where I paid $75 for an escort to accompany me home. I thought i could just ditch her at the curb, but she said the rule was she had to take me to to my door. So we rode the subway home together. It was weird!

I'm not having family or friends at my surgery either. Was planning on taking a taxi home (it's just 10 minutes away) if they allow it.

Have someone go with you for support. It will make alot more easier for you.

@@Sandy GlueStick I checked in alone and told anyone who wanted to visit to stay the F away. No interest in friends or family seeing me with my butt hanging out of a hospital gown. I had no problem at all. You'll need someone to drive you home, of course. That you can't do.

My husband stopped by once a day, but that is all I wanted - I just wanted to sleep, walk and sip ..... going home and having someone around if I needed them was helpful - in NJ , had to have someone pick up/ escort home

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
