Insurance Approval Jitters

Recommended Posts

I love that we have a forum to discuss these things! After what I've read, we're going to need each other....especially the first few weeks after surgery.

Is it bad that I'm already planning the clothes I'm going to buy once I loose the weight? I think my husband is dreading that.

I'm so relieved to see this topic. I'm not sure if I have any advice, but maybe knowing that others are in the same boat can help alleviate some tension. I have completed all of my pre-op directives and am waiting for insurance approval. I have NC-BCBS. Part of me is sure that I will be approved, but there is always that nagging doubt until I actually get the word on a surgery date. The anticipation seems to be the worst, and I feel like I can easily conquer the things that most people feel they struggle with, if I can just know that everything is a go and it WILL happen.

At this point, I have to keep reminding myself that it's out of my hands. I have no control over my insurance approval, except for the prerequisites which I have already completed. I have done my part. So, I know that what I am dealing with is pure anticipation.

Telling someone to "hang in there" is so cliché and sounds so weak. However, when you think about it, right now that's all we can do. The insurance approval is out of our hands and at this point we have no control over the outcome. We have done our part. So maybe the best thing we can do now is focus on those things we do have control over and continue to do our best at being the healthiest we can possibly be right now.

Since you've all submitted your things in I have a question. Did you guys have to do a chest X-ray? I know all insurances are different but it seems like most people have to do one and it wasn't in my check list. I'm hoping my coordinator didn't miss that or something.

The only thing I had to do was the 6 month diet which has been less than fun. I'm right on the cusp of being "morbidly obese" and so I was told that I had to loose a pound a month but not to go below a certain weight. I hit that weight, went below it, and had to eat to bounce back up. Now I'm 3 pounds more than I should be! I'm worried about that too.

To answer your question, I did not have to have the chest xray. My plan required the diet only.

Thank you. I thought it was only me lol

When I started I was like 41 bmi but now I'm at 39. I however was told that the first weight is the one that's counted and my surgeon encouraged me to lose and not gain over my starting weight. I ended up on my last weigh in too be 3 pounds heavy then the weigh in before it but still under my starting weight so I feel your worry lol.

So I just got off the phone with my surgeons office and I'm seriously not thrilled. So I have to see him and the nutritionist but they are scheduling a month put :( so my appointment is July 21st. Which makes me sad cause I was hoping this would all go faster. So they lady told me that once I see the Dr he will give me a number of pounds to lose while we wait for insurance. And honestly hate this and am so mad cause in my six months I've struggled to lose 20 lbs. My mom went through the same office back in January and they told her to lose 30, and I'm so worried that I won't be able to do it. She told me they won't schedule my surgery until I do hit that goal. Ugh I hate this its making my tummy hurt.

So sorry to hear about the speed bump in your path to healthier living. Remember, the speed bump is there to get insurance approval so you do not have to pay the $40k+ it will take to have the surgery. (BTW - remind me of this if my surgery approval does not come through!!!)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
