Prescribed vegan diet

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My surgeon and his team basically have prescribed a vegan based diet following bariatric surgery. I was sleeved on 03/01/16 and have been following this diet as much as I can. I am struggling somewhat but wanted to know how others have done on this type of diet.

I have been vegetarian before -throughout my teenage years, but as of late I find myself wanting to be completely raw. Not sure if that's due to it already reaching 100 degrees in Texas or if it's me being lazy.

Any one else in the same boat?

Thank you.

It's interesting that you were prescribed vegan diet post-op. I wish my NUT was that progressive. They support a vegetarian diet but not a vegan one.

I ate mostly vegan before surgery and would like to switch back as soon as possible but I'm not sure if I can manage it.

It's ok. Just hard sometimes for me when my GERD tries to act up. However, it's hard to find a community outside my surgeons office that follows the same thing. Across Instagram (where I follow a lot of people for inspiration) people are worried about Protein goals and calories.

My surgeon said I can eat as much as I want and as often as I want as long as it's fruits & vegetables. There's no way you can be Protein deficient. I'm trying to stay within those rules but sometimes a girl just wants a grimy pizza or milk chocolate. Not that I've given in yet, but my mind still plays tricks.

I try to eat this way most of the time it's tough. Here is great cookbook if you can get over the silly tone of the book and don't mind some salty language they have excellent recipes. post-146352-14664598588608_thumb.jpg

I started a vegan lifestyle as soon as i got my surgery. Did not told this to my surgeon. I know he wouldn't approved. It has been a little difficult to keep a good balance.

So far i have learn:

  1. EAT YOUR GREENS...at least 5 times a week!! at least 2 cups of kale or spinach or some other leafy greens
  2. take a vegan Vitamin supplement, I use Deva Tiny Tablets
  3. No isolated oils... I use nut butters, and all sort of seeds and nuts. But totally avoid as much as i can isolated oils. The only one i may use 1 time a week is the coconut oil.
  4. eat whole grains, oats, brown rice, whole wheat you name it! every day!!
  5. fall in luv with all types of potatoes, sweets, yams etc.... I have no limits and eat them as much as i can.
  6. I use only organic soy milk!! it has lots of Protein...
  7. no problem with fruits and veggies... eat them with freedom
  8. no process sugars... instead I mixed some stevia with unprocess brown sugar and use that instead, to use less sugar as possible. But also use lots of dates instead.
  9. follow Dr. Gregers Daily Dozen app! this will safe your life!
  10. dont be afraid of carbs ... they are your friends just keep it whole food, low or no oil or process sugars.
  11. and stay away from process vegan food.. is full with additives, salt, sugars and oils.
  12. follow all this and every thing will be great.

Hi!

You know, I decided long ago to join the ranks of a vegetarian, one person advised me to start, for my health and lose weight.

I'm just trudging on the fact that I do not eat fish, meat and seafood. I started to cook, for what I did not like before, and cooking is now a pleasure, and it turns out magically delicious.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
