Options...don't know what to do...

Recommended Posts

Hi ya'll! I'm new here. I'm very set on this surgery and I'm trying to consider my options. I don't want to jump through insurance hoops...wanted to go to Mexico but the hubby said no. Now I'm looking at Las Vegas. I'm scared if just don't do it I'll change my mind and I need this bad? Thoughts? Suggestions? Ask I just lusting after this? Help!!!

Do your research and interview doctors until you find YOUR fit. Mexico might seem scary to some, but it might be the best option for you. It's the doctor that matters, not the location. Only you can decide.

You right and thanks for the reply. I really just want to go and get it over with. I dont think there is anything wrong with Mexico I've spoken to cate coordinators who all seem to be amazing and no one video I've seen on YouTube has said anything negative about Mexico. Deciding is hard...I already feel horrible spending the money on myself for the procedure. I'm praying!

My insurance requirements seem to be reasonable and then I have other test that are required by the surgeon. I'm hoping that after doing everything it will be 3-5 months from evaluation to surgery.

I'm older so understand the extra clearance that is being required. Right now I'm thinking positive, but I might have a different opinion later if I am not approved.

Best of luck with your decision.

It may seem like the insurance hoops are burdensome and pointless, but there really is some method to the madness.

The intent is that you will go into this surgery as well prepared and healthy as possible. They really do want you to succeed.

Every pre-op test, clearance, class, and appointments is for your benefit.

Best of luck in your journey.

I think it would be worth it to have a consult with a Dr and discuss options and see if you meet the insurance requirements!

I don't know if your in the BMI range but if you think it will be a helpful tool for you to get to your best health and feeling good, its worth considering!!

I second this. I've shepherded more than 65 people through the process, and I can tell you, that no matter where you get your surgery, or by whom, it's impossible to be over-educated or over-prepared. No matter what you decide, it's completely worth the time you take to do the mental and emotional work to know what you're getting in to, and what changes you will need to make in your relationship with food - and with yourself. If you have emotional issues that contribute to your obesity, know that those issues aren't removed along with (most of) your stomach.

Thank you and you too! It's a brave decision all around I just feel tired already with all the stuff. I just want to be on my new journey...however I suspect this is all apart of that journey as well. How are you feeling @@rdharri? I'm trying to not tell too many people because of all the extra input. Someone has said..."you get what you pay for" I just want to stay positive also.

when I was in my preop stage I was ready to have my surgery right now. lets get going. once I made my mind to do it I wanted it done.

and then during all those hoops they found a medical issue, and I needed to deal with that first. It delayed my surgery about a year, but during that time I educated myself and found when surgery finally was ready to happen, I was better prepared.

I don't know what will be your best option, but I know those hoops are there for a reason, and while it can drive you mad to go through the process it can also be a very good thing in the long run.

and yes, regarding the money, you are worth it if that ends up being *your* best option! in any case, keep us updated on your process.

Depending on your insurance requirements, it might not be so bad. Mine requires a visit with a nutritionist, recommendation by a second doctor, a psych eval, and a three month supervised diet. The one I resent is the supervised diet, but with all the other things insurance required plus what my surgeon wanted... EGD, cardiac clearance, it's going by faster than I thought it would. I could be approved shortly after my last diet appointment in early July but I have a break between semesters (I'm in grad school) in early August all I'm hoping to be able to schedule it for then. You have to find what is your best option, but you may find the insurance requirements aren't that bad. Good luck!

find out what your insurance requrements are, they might not be so bad and you won't have to spend all that money out of pocket. It's not a bad idea to go to the doctors they require to really make sure you are healthy enough to go through surgery. I heard one person talk about durring their pre op testing they actually discovered a serious tumor they didn't know they had.

While my ins. co. did not require a watch/wait/monitored weight loss period, my surgeon (who is at a bariatric center of excellence) requires 3 months of supervised weight loss. To be honest, I was angry at first, but then realized it was really all for the best because I needed to get my head around some new habits (eating and drinking 15-30 minutes apart, eating Protein first, chewing very, very well, etc.) Much of this is in your head and not in your body. Also, it has taken me almost 2 months to get all my pre-op testing done -- pulmonary and cardiac clearances, barium swallow (followed by endocsopy because they wanted to double check my esophagus), chest x-ray, blood work, support group meeting, psychological evaluation. I will finish up with all that on June 30. My final "supervised" visit is on July 8 and all will be sent to my insurance company and I'll get a date. I started all this on May 11. I've lost 13 pounds, found a personal trainer and have made peace with my decision and how to handle it with others who ask.

I know once you decide to do it - you just want to get it done -- but give your mind some time to adapt. You'll be glad later.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
